A few have been trying to break the new TT encryption for three years now with no luck. It has been described as devilishly complex. Its implementation coincided with a completely user inaccessible file system and concurrent reports of poor performance. Customers just stopped buying the Tomtom Via line in the US.

At first I thought the renewed Garmin effort might have been related to the $7.2B Microsoft purchase of Nokia, but Nokia did not include the NAVTEQ (aka Here) division in that deal.

FWIW - My mostly anecdotal observation is that Garmin has just hammered Tomtom in the consumer GPS market for the past two years.
