I have had many Garmin GPSmap and eTrex devices over the years and have found it easy to transfer all my waypoints to my computer for analysis and backup. On a GPSMap 76CSx or an eTrex Vista HC I could simply attach the USB cable and upload data to G7toWin, Topo!, Mapsource, etc. Then I could translate these to CSV and put them in a spreadsheet.

That was then. Now I have a Garmin GPSMap 62s, which acts as a USB mass storage device. The data are stored in GPX files, but here is the problem. For some crazy reason, the device produces a new file for every day that you create waypoints, e. g. Waypoints_23-07-11.gpx. Eventually there will be hundreds of these files, each containing only a waypoint or two. In addition there is a Current.gpx file, which seems to contain automatically saved points of the track followed.

Question: How can I get all my waypoints in a single file on my computer, and if possible on the GPS? It appears that I will have to open ever single GPX files separately and extract the data. Surely there is a better way.

Note: the newer GPS units have no manuals, even on PDF, worthy of notice, and in the case of the 62S there is no mention of the data files, or transferring user data. The lack of documentation is disgraceful.
