I have seen many posts with locked and unlocked img files for garmin GPS.
What is difference and which one is better to use?
Locked with specific unl info for a particular device or unlocked ?
I hope experts will give their views.

Both maps are the same, just u don't need an unlock code anymore.
Depending your device, it's possible that u have no choice to use unlocked maps.
