Usual Nuvi are cashing unlock code to memory during first load with new unlock code. So you may delete unlock files but map still work normally.
But then you do hard reset the cash will be clear too. So all unlock code in cash erased. If unlock files are present Nuvi reread unlock code to cash again after reset...
