try this:
switch on your nuvi without the cable and let it boot up until it reaches the Where To? screen and the simulator must be off before you plug in the USB cable, then it will get into mass storage mode.

I can't believe your solution was so easy. Thanks for your help catymag, it worked.
As an aside, do you know if there are any problems with allowing windows to scan and fix? or should i just ignore?
