It depends what you're referring to as 'Garmin GPI files'. Cyclops GPI files are quite different to other third-party files, the latter being simple to dissemble and manipulate, Cyclops not so easy at all. What exactly are you wanting to do?

I have an old Streetpilot i3 and used to load POI's via the POIoader program when I ran Windows. GPI files, you probably know, are what the POI's are converted into before being uploaded. Nowadays I run Linux, so that's out. Yes I could run Wine but I thought this might me a good time to write some code to interface with my self-written GIS program. Yes I could arrive at enough of the format by trial and error to make do, but I thought I'd check here first. HTH ...
