Thanks. Interesting thread, however still looks like the process is completely manual. It looks like alternative is to use GPSMapEdit from geopainting.com. It opens .IMG files directly, however is extremely slow rendering. I supposed it could be exported as an ESRI .shp file, however unsure how much data is retained.
