To find the type and subtype of an object , I use special typ files. These typ files contain objects (lines for example) with a special color : the type/subtype is written in the hex code of the color.
So you just have to look at you map in BaseCamp or Mapsource and if the line has changed, it means that the code is in the typ file. Read the color of the line and you have the typ/subtype.
Step by step
- use TYPViewer to create such special typ files : "Tools" --> "Special TYP for types identification" select the type of the object and the range of types. For example, most of the lines are in the ranges 0x00 to 0xFF with no subtype or 0x10000 to 0x10f1f or 0x11000 to 0x11f1f . Then click on "OK"
- use TYPViewer to deactivate shading in Basecamp/Mapsource (otherwise colors will be modified by the shading) : "Tools" --> "Activate/deactivate shading in BC or MS
- associate your special typ file to your mapset : "Tools" --> "Install a TYP file..." : select your mapset in the list then click on "Choose a TYP file" select your typ file and then "OK"
- open Basecamp or Mapsource, go to a location where you can see your line, in TYPViewer go to "Tools" --> "Color identifier" and put the cursor over the line : the little window of the color identifier will show you the type/subtype of the line

you cannot remove a polygon with a typ file but, as you say, you can make it transparent. (playing with priority is not a good thing for hiding polygons...)
Another way : if a mapset is associated to a typ file and if this typ file has a draworder section that is not empty, only the polygons written in the draworder are displayed. So , if you remove a polygon from the draworder, it will not be displayed.
The second method is perhaps a better way to do this, because the polygon is not displayed at all (with the first method, it is displayed but as a transparent one) so the GPS unit will be less slowed down IMHO...
It's my case too. Found nice polygons definitions, showing a lot more areas.
As I use a topo overlayed, most of them are not in draworder anymore and won't waste CPU time.
But some are transparent, so I have more infos (industrial zone, shopping zone, hospital zone).
After a long time behind TYPViewer it's done and done.
Added my final config in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], maybe it's useful for someone...
Rametto and Sherco40 thank you for discovering those two custom road categories!!!
Those two are not routable and in reality the "thin road 0x10805" is most of the times (where I've checked with streetview) not allowed for vehicles and the "thin trail 0x1080c" accessible only on foot.
They are drawn on map (default TYP) exactly the same as residential street and trail, exactly the same as the the two routable categories that Garmin uses in the cities.
So with the default TYP you can easily get crazy if you try to navigate these streets and you may came to believe that the map is wrong or the device is malfunctioning!!!
Little details make the map perfect :-)
My CN 2015.20 above contains two little inconsistencies:
- lake (see pic)
- some narrow streams being displayed in dark blue

Took a look at the special typ files functionality. Added more and more POIs up to the point where I found inconsistencies in the maps themselves.
Seems as if garmin people categorize differently from country to country.
Found a few missing defs in MPCTypes (I know it contains already tons of info) and minor inconsistencies. Question: Does Garmin change their defs all the time? Or does one map use def X for one thing and the other map the same def X for a completely different one??
Nevertheless I attach my results, TYPs for CN 2015.20 and Swiss Topo. See images for an overview of definitions.

As Cnfhbr says, the MPCTypes.txt comes from the program named Mapsource Product Creator (MPC).
The categories and types written in this files are the categories and files suggested and used by MPC.
So if you create a map by means of MPC and if you respect those suggestions, you map will match the categories and types of MPCTypes.txt.
But if you use MPC and do not respect this or if you do not use MPC, you probably assign other types to the objects of your map and the MPCTypes.txt does not apply in this case.
