    Shonkymaps v/3.51 (Mapsource)
Australian Explorer GPS Topo Maps for Garmins

Requirements: Any PC/PPC/Symbian Device running Garmin Mobile XT for PC/Mobile

Overview: Shonkymaps are a set of unofficial Garmin compatible topographic maps that cover the whole of Australia. The author was not satisfied with the Garmin base map that came with the Garmin gps, and at the time there were no other topographic products either official or unofficial. He created his own set of downloadable topographic maps as a hobby / labour of love.
The data is the 250k scale set from Geoscience Australia and is licensed for non-commercial use. The author makes these maps available to other Garmin users as a favour on the understanding that the user abides by the copyright agreement and there is no support other than that provided by other users on the

If the maps work for you and are useful for your requirements then great. If they don't work, and break your garmin then you have been warned

I always thought the term "shonky" meant something that is not what it is portrayed to be. Usually refers to cars that are clean and nice on the outside but poorly put together mechanically or when a mechanic has done a "shonky" job and it costs money to correct their mistakes. It also usually refers to "deals" which are too good to be true and have conditions and fine print built into them which are to your disadvantage.

Here we have Shonkymaps. I guess I'm too old fashioned (and too old) to get the "shonky' connotation out of my head. :-)

LOL! Your [mine too, i'm even older] generation of Aussies usually instinctively understands 'self-depreciating' humour, and in this case it would be easy to explain away the name as that, even down to the childlike backwards 'K' in the home page header:
    Code:

But it's not that, it's based on the Author's geocaching name 'Shonkylogic' [i've long wondered if that's a play on 'fuzzy logic']. If you look at the testimonials the full blab is there:

Welcome to Noeman kajob. Interesting first post and interesting nick. I don't think we should ask you to explain it somehow ....
