As far as it being 'up to date' is concerned, the basemap is not as important as the detail map in that the basemap is usually worldwide and only has gross detail such as major roads which don't change that much. The basemap is very valuable at high zoom levels and scrolling to prevent lag or worse, but pretty useless for normal navigation even if it's routable. The important map to keep up to date is your local detail map of course, which you've done. You may be better to stay with your old basemap, as a more modern one such as for Nuvi units may be much larger with DEM info that your unit cannot easily handle when zoomed out. It is possible to remove DEM from a basemap though. I've got a SP 2610 still with it's original basemap.
