Most of us love favorites. Tomtom has a flawed system for storing them which makes preserving when upgrading impossible.
You can preserve when you make them POI's (Point of Interest).
The procedure is described on the TomTom website:

Just a quick update on this topic, obviously as time goes on a quick way around the problem of saving or transferring your favourites has now been found and it is now possible to save your favourites.

1. Go to your map folder and find the file called 'MapSettings.cfg'
2. Either copy it to your HDD for later use, or copy it to your new map folder.

Not only does it save your favourites, but also many other settings such as POI and camera settings.
