help Help Garmin Nuvi 54lm screen disappearing and freezing during operation

    Hello,
    Please can anyone help.
    Garmin Nuvi 54lm ( 006 -B1613 -00 s/w 4.0 NTU 2026.20 all )
The Nuvi has just been updated to latest map, however while in use the screen has a tendency to freeze, sometimes for a few seconds, or the display will disappear altogether and only come back if I press return and then press view map. If no route is planned the display of the current road will sometimes hesitate or partially disappear but eventually sorts itself out. Seems to take its time to refresh and show the road just ahead.
I've reset the Nuvi a few times, reinstalled the maps, and deleted all unnecessary files such as keyboards, voices, car symbols etc. The space left is around 450mb. No sd was offered by GE when updating the maps.
I have not tried re flashing the firmware, as not able to find one on the Perry page.
Can anyone provide a 4.0 copy, or sd card flash kit, or offer any other ideas please. Thanks Rusty

    G'day again Rusty!

Likely it just needs a hard-reset (aka "master reset") or even clearing of the non-volatile memory. The latter usually works to stop weird behavior if a reset doesn't. Check the following links:

    Hi Neil,
Tried and successfully reset the Nuvi and also cleared nonvol. However this made no difference. Screen is still very slow and laggy.
I have two other options and would appreciate your thoughts ...
First is to use windows explorer and move the map folder from the Nuvi onto the sd card, thus freeing up about 3.5gb and giving the unit more space to operate, or secondly I've found the 4.0 firmware from an old Catymag post which I have made into a rgn file ready to reflash. However I'm a bit reluctant to flash the firmware after reading the post Boki has shared as I might make things worse.

It's maybe a 'space' problem but i think having ~450MB spare is sufficient. I had Garmin units operate quite normally with much less than that. However, yes you can move the maps and associated files onto a microSD if you wish to try that.

About re-flashing the current V4.00 firmware as an RGN, again i don't see a problem trying that either although this just doesn't feel like a fw problem to me. More likely the symptoms you've described are due to either a partially-corrupt file onboard or, of a more problematic nature, a corrupted non-vol region, or, ultimately fatal, a failing flash chip. Like i said before though, usually that kind of flaky behaviour is fixed by clearing non-vol.

Certainly the other device discussed in the linked thread had some type of physical damage going on with its flash chip.

Try the other things first and if the slow functioning persists we can dump its non-vol region then erase it. After it boots and re-writes part of the region, if it functions normally we'll know that the problem surely lurks in the not-clearable (but erasable) data in that region. If its flakiness still persists then re-writing the dumped copy will be in order.

Unfortunately if the flash chip really is failing, any messing around with flashing and dumping might just hasten its eventual demise from the stress of it.
