The kit is ready. I'll explain a bit about it's purpose then you can decide if you want to try it. There are 3 quite different outcomes possible, listed further below. The hope is that firstly the devices is even capable of executing txt commands in this manner and secondly if it is capable that the faulty boot process is being entered into far enough to allow a flash to be instigated by the 'ldr.bin' [boot/loader] on the SD. The ldr.bin which is from GVN53 fw is inside a folder named '1036' which matches the present [Edge500] HWID of the device. If the boot process goes far enough, the Garmin/Updater folders on the card will be inspected and the folder matching the device's HWID [1036] will be opened and the GVN53's HWID 0741 ldr.bin initiated to carry out the txt commands in 'Update.txt' file. If the ldr.bin is used, it hopefully will overwrite the incorrect boot information presently contain in the boot-specific regions on the device. We will then attempt later to flash the correct unit software [firmware] to rgn14 with fw_all.bin and if appropriate erase rgn85 which has maybe been flashed by the Edge500's fw_all2.bin as well. Therefore they along with rgn41 are the ones i'd be most interested in looking at but i've included a few others as well. I don't know if it will treat the SD card as 1:\ or 2:\ so i've duplicated the commands but it will only write to the card as 1 or 2 not both, or maybe not at all as said.

So here are the possible outcomes:
  • Nothing happens, the flash isn't initiated at all because either (i) the device doesn't have that capability in it's firmware; or (ii) the faulty incomplete boot process isn't progressing far enough. [Bummer!]
  • It flashes, dumps the regions and the correct boot information is written, which will maybe allow us to more easily fix the rest of it's problems. [Hooray!]
  • It hard-bricks the unit and it will never boot again unless the flash chip is replaced or re-programmed [no one's gonna do that for such an old unit, or if done the cost would be uneconomical as probably it'd be much more that the (working) device is worth]. [Strip it for parts, you might get a few Ringits for them on eBay]

I don't have the slightest idea what will happen and none of our experts have posted to give an opinion. So if you want to roll the dice on this and take the risk, look behind the Spoiler for the download. Un-rar the kit 'Extract_To_Clean_SD_Card.rar' directly to a CLEAN SD, insert it and power the device on. Good luck.
