Hi
Can anyone please tell me which new UK and Europe maps will work on a 1490 and do I need to update the firmware?

thanks for the info on the map type, I have downloaded the 2015_40 Europa maps and un-archived them, I have read so much of the tutorials I am going round in circles, there is just too much to take in, especially for someone who has never touched a garmin before.
the unit has no expansion micro sd card inserted so all the current system is in the unit.
I have copied the content of the unit to the PC.
Can I update the system content on the PC and copy it to a new Micro SD card the same way as a TomTom?
If so, how do I prevent the old system from reading the internal system and memory? do I delete the existing system from the unit?
Will the unit then read from the Micro SD card?
or
do I delete the existing system from the unit and copy the new updated system to the unit from the PC.
do I copy the new maps, gmapsupp.img to a micro sd card and delete gmapprom.img from the .system? (Rename gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img ????)
so many possibilities for disaster.
Simply replace original gmapprom (unlocked with gimgunlock) in .system and remove old gmapprom.unl and .gma.
That's all.
Look at garmindevice.xml in Garmin folder for supported addition files and their paths and replace old files in nuvi.
gmap3d.img too must be unlocked.

Looking at the .system folder there are no files with an extension of .unl or .gma
there are only :
fs_image.ver
gmapbmap.img
gmapbmap.sum
gmapprom.img
gmapprom.sum
gmaptz.img
gmaptz.sum
locales.xml
TrafficProvider.xml
There is no garmindevice.xml in the garmin folder or it's sub folders, the only item in the garmin folder is a sub folder LEX_PKG.
Does this nuvi work fine ?
If it shows maps probably these are unlocked.
You have a timezone map and a basemap.
Run webupdater and see if you can update firmware and other files.
Weird you don't have a garmindevice.xml in Garmin folder and it's not a good sign.Code:Please Login or Register to see the links

Nick, if you're planning on installing all of Europe on the device, get a MicroSD card. Europe may not fit in the internal storage.
A micro sd card is a must from the look of the map sizes. but I'm not sure yet how to put the maps onto the card so the device can use them. need to do a bit more reading
*catmag : The device works fine, just the maps are outdated, unfortunately my son-in-law has just gone off on holiday and taken the device with them, so I won't have it for a couple of weeks.
the gmapprom.img should be the large file with the maps inside. If you are unsafe what to do, take a 4GB micro sd card, create a folder "map" on the sdcard, and copy the 2015.40 version "gmapsupp.img" in the map folder on the sdcard. The original gmapprom.img on the device rename to gmapprom.im_, so the nuvi cannot detect the old map. If the new mapfile doesnt work, you can go back the steps without "data loss".
In 1xxx series, and newer, in folder "Map" anyname.img is supported.
