Maybe Edge 1000/Explore is different to other Edge [20/25/800]. Try holding power button and connecting USB, or some other button like 'Timer' [Stop/Start] or a combination. Another 1000 user might post to say ......
Yes, I've tried to press the Lap button and then turn on the device as well as press the button and then connect to USB. In both cases the button was pressed all the time and in both cases the device just booted regularly...
I'm probably doing something wrong but I have no idea what...
Just to be sure - there are two buttons one is the lap (the left one) and the other one (right one) is the start/stop button...

ok - if I turn it on while pressing the start/stop button I am getting a screen with options: Burn-in test, BI Test Check info, General information etc.
Is that the pre-boot mode?

Does it show up in the window next to 'USB Device' in Updater.exe's GUI?

nope....
I open the updater, then I put the device into this mode (not sure if its pre-boot), then connected the device to USB while pressing the start button - but as soon as I connect to the USB the device is booting, and it is not detected by the updated software... bummer... :-(
Try holding all other buttons and any combination of two together while connecting USB. If nothing works then you'll have to hope someone posts to say how to attain preboot.

Before connecting the USB Edge 1000 to press and hold (until the end of uploading) key Lap / Reset.

You have to navigate to get to the good.

ok - I think it works. I expected to see it enters a mode however when I had the updater running and connected the garmin to the USB while pressing the lap button I saw it being recognized by the updater.
Ok - now before I try the hybrid version I'd like to backup my current version so that I can revert back to it if it does not work.
When I open the RGN tool - it does not see my edge. Is there something that I need to do there?
You need to be very careful messing with firmware mods if you don't understand the basics. I've said a couple of times about the device details appearing in the window next to 'USB Device' of Updater's GUI indicating that it's in preboot [because you can only start the flash then]. Now you're asking about RGN_Tool not seeing your Edge. That's used to open GCD and RGN files and their BIN file components, it has nothing to do with the unit directly and doesn't connect to any Garmin device. Why are you asking about RGN_Tool now? Are you expecting that it can somehow 'backup my current version'? Your current version is the bog-standard Edge 1000 Explore firmware Version 3.00 available from several sources:
Read my previous comment about why you should use the 'hybrid' firmware i've supplied, which is Edge 1000 Explore boot.bin combined with remaining firmware from Edge 1000 and has been modified to retain the Explore's HWID but will hopefully work to boot and run the explore as a 1000, and importantly will enable an easy flash back to Explore if there's a problem [because we haven't changed the unit's HWID [hardware identification number].Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
Please only keep going when you've got your head around this. Only then can you make an informed decision about any risk, which increases exponentially and inversely to the operator's knowledge. With some basic knowledge the risk is very small indeed. My concern is that quite obviously you're yet to grasp the basics of course.

Neil,
I'd rather not do anything with the RGN tool. How can I make a backup for my current firmware to recover my edge explor 1000 if the hybrid firware won't work?
If you can send me the original rgn file I would much prefer it...
