I really don't know more than what Garmin states at the product homepage.
Current release 2012.40 has 11 South American countries plus 2.4 million km road coverage and 2.5 million POIs.
The previous release has the figures below and changes are marked with red.

Can't get any file from filefactory (firefox/chorome/ie). I've paciently tried more than 15 times just to get corrupted files. Frustrated ! I'm giving up, waiting someone to upload to some other server.

I am using the img from post 1 on my nuvi and the ms unlocked from post 2 on my PC. They worked well on a trip to Panama and Costa Rica which are 2 of the 4 countries Garmin added to this version. I had previously been using CenRut - a user developed free product. The Garmin version seems to have more POI and perhaps slightly more accurate location - but CenRut covers all Central America.
The detail seems to meet what Garmin says when they code this medium blue on their coverage map - full detail like USA in the main cities, less detail for the more rural areas. This is the same as Mexico in their North America product.
The MS Unlocked in post 2 says Brazil when downloaded from FileFactory and says Brazil when being installed - but actually does install the whole South America product. No unlock needed - just installed and it works.
The img in post 1 is named South_America_2012_40.img (which helps keep track if you have several img files. To use it on your device you might need to rename to the standard supp img name. You will need to unlock with Fast IMG unlocker as stated in the post.
I really like the Noeman site. Good downloads but the best part is that info is well organized and if you spend some time, you can get all the info you need. Credit to both uploaders and moderators.

"SouthAmerica_2012_40.img" is actually the original file name directly from Garmin. Newer Garmin units that have extra maps in "[UNIT or memory card]:\Map" directory will get this file as "[UNIT or memory card]:\Map\SouthAmerica_2012_40.img" when downloading from Garmin.
Older Garmin units may have to store the map in the Garmin sub-directory instead and rename the file to "gmapsupp.img" or "gmapsup2.img" or "gmapprom.img" or "gmapprom1.img". All depending on the type of unit and the usage of other maps with their existing file names.
You may check the "[GPS unit]\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml" file and see if there's a NMaps tag and a location of those maps. If so, then you can use any file name in that location as long as the extension remains IMG.
Comparing both versions, basically, they inserted Peru, Paraguay and some coutries in Central America. Maybe they are making only one map for all American continent......
Ah, just one tip: change the coverage map link to this City Navigator South America NT 2012.40.
That one that you inserted is related to the version 2012.30.

Reason: Merged two consequtive posts from the same user (that's talking to himself) and coded official Garmin URL.
