I think this means that your map is at least one year old, maybe there really are updates? Community maps change often.
If you have map in Mapsource, then you can try to send it again to nuvi.
I was never able to test that kind of problem. My first try would be to load img form nuvi to gmaptool and to refresh img header, this is option on "Write" tab of program, mark checkbox "Refresh header date", leave date fields empty and click "Write all".

Use it as follows:
1) Fully boot your device.
2) Press the battery icon until an engineering menu appears
3) Connect the device to PC
4) run start.bat by double clicking it
In case of success the utility will print a text similar to the following:
Code:

Initializing USB...
hwid = 596
swvr = 490
name = n№vi 670 Software Version 4.90
Initializing USB once again...
removing the map update message...
all done
M:\WORK\GARMIN\[UTILS]\mupd-clr\Release>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

Tried it but no luck.
The start batch executed with some SetupInDev error after the Initializing USB line.
On the enginnering menu, the USB cable is shown not connected, although under normal mode I could read Garmin drive etc.

This is where things fall over for me: to connect to the PC I have to open the battery door, which switches it back into "Close the door" mode. When I connect the cable it goes straight to mass storage mode.

What device do you own? That tp2168 quote of my post is valid mainly for nuvis. The battery icon is inside the red circle: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
