I did manage to update the bootloader that went from5.51 to 5.52, as it happens is not as simple as replacing the file but anyway, even when the new bootloader I cannot get the thing to read any card other than a 1GB, I low formatted a 4GB card and copied the files from the original card onto the 4GB card and it seems to have trouble reading it.
It shows the start image for about a minute and then it shuts itself off. I have tried with a 16GB card and it does the same.

    You replaced 5.51xx with 5.52xx?
You could have saved yourself that trouble because from 5.5028 you should already be able to use SDHC cards up to 32Gb.

So there must be something completely different going on.
Assuming the bootloader is nothing but the BIOS in your computer and it only boots up all hardware, don't look for the error there.

    Go back to the beginning.
If you still have the original SD card, test it to see if the problem still exists.
If not, then there is nothing hardware wrong with the Rider v2 and it must be a software problem.

In that case I suggest that you go to my private server via the following link below to the folder TomTom_Navcore_Used_By_PE1AGP and choose a Navcore that I also use for the Rider v2.
Also install the smallest map that you can find, it may be very wise to start without a map first, that test may only end in no map found.

The original SD card is 1GB so I can't use it to test anything, I have tried a couple of different (larger capacity) SD cards with the contents of the original card but it won't read them.
It shows the picture with the rider POV and then it shuts itself off.
is there any special consideration to take into account when formatting the card? I tried low formatting using a SLDR and then I transfer the contents of the original card but still nothing.

No, the only requirement is the fat32 format.
That it should be slow is the most blatant nonsense, just like that you can only update the bootloader with a higher version, in two steps you can go back to any other version.

It is not entirely clear to me whether the original 1GB card works or not, if it does not cause any problems it is indeed very strange that every other SDHC card is rejected more or less.
I can use any SDHC card up to 32GB in my Rider v2 that I have been using since 2009.

I can imagine wear and tear on the SD slot, or contamination of the contacts, then cleaning could be the solution.
Try it with a different brand of card, it may have been a coincidence, but with another device I've had problems with a cheap possibly too cheap card and that was also refused.

I would start by opening the Rider and checking the inside for damage, loose soldering and or water damage. Although this device must be splash-proof, you should not always assume that it will always remain that way
Replacing the SD slot is also an option to ensure that the contacts actually make contact there.

Do you live far from our border?
It is only an hour's drive for me, testing one of your SDHC cards in the Rider of mine can already provide an answer about the card itself, would be more convenient with someone in your immediate vicinity, but if there is no other option, I will step on my cycle in good weather and at least I have a goal to drive to, if your information here on the forum is correct.
