Need to buy either a Tom Tom or Nuvi...which model is better?

Stick with TT. I would suggest a 540/740/940 LIVE (if you want LIVE services) or a refurbed x30 model as all these can be tweaked to run downloaded maps from here

What you should avoid is any model that runs v10/v11 navcore & connects through MyTomTom, see [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I have been happy using TomTom Via 1500TM, In both USA, and Mexico.
this unit was on sale at walmart for approx $100.

Note:
This unit can not be patched, also you will need to update the firmware before using this unit.

Never buy a new model running NC10 like the VIA if you are not willing to pay for maps or want more than what the NC offers.
Suggesting to buy such a device to a forum member is not nice

Best price option is the 720 or 730, 520 and 530 are a bit hard to get these days.
The 720/730 offers all hardware features a user can need (apart from Live what needs a connection from your phone) and it is easy to modify.
Keep a good working NC on the internal memory to play with new stuff on the SD, if you are in trouble on the road, revove SD and keep going

Also: they are fully compatible with the truck map and Navcore.

Ask the same question at the Garmin forum, and you'll get the opposite answers......
I think it's a question of what you're used to work with.

If you need more than road navigation go for Garmin as you get Topo and OSM maps as well.
Using them on a TT is possible using ttmaps but with only 2 hours of battery life a TT is useless for walking or on the bicycle for example.

Same to me..I'm quite happy with 910 tomtom..
But next time I might go with Garmin..Garmin has a lot of different map you can use for..
water, topo, etc..
