There are many GPS app for hiking and sports.
They all work in the woods and in mountain area's.
Even my smartwatch is linked to my phone to keep track of my steps.
The down side is battery life
They are not water proof
or
Not shock proof if you drop them.
So if a user does not want to buy a standalone GPS unit it is the next best thing.
I have crossed paths with many hikers using smartphones to hike with or Geocache with.
Been using both on and off for a long time.
My choice of GPS is the GPSMAP 66s but will use smartphone apps too.
