Default Nuvi 255 TTS voices not working?

I need some guidance. I got a Nuvi 255 recently which is a model that should support text-to-speech. It did not contain any TTS voices so I used Garmin Express for updating and getting optional voices in English, but no TTS voice was added (those that do would say 'Says Street Names' in the menu).

So I used a different Nuvi of mine (1240, with working TTS) to copy over the TTS voice .VPM file 'Emily' to the 255. However, Emily does not show up at all on the 255. Same story with other TTS voices. However, non-TTS voices (which are those with a small size like 2MB instead of 20MB) do show up and work on the 255. Garmin Express also doesn't offer anything more after I put those files on the device.

I went to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and tried several other voices, only 'VCT' voices (like Voice_BritishEnglish-Kate_VCT__210.vpm) show up successfully on the Nuvi 255 but these are not TTS voices. Some files were .RGN and these also did not work on it when putting in the Voices folder, so I even tried installing them manually using Garmin WebUpdater but no luck. What do I do now?

There are a few quite different versions of TTS voice files for Garmin devices and they aren't interchangeable between many model series (the original TTS aka "TTS1"; TTS2 & TTS3). Certainly, the TTS voices meant for nuvi 1xxx series aren't usable in the nuvi 2x5, they are many times larger files for starters. Using the wrong VPM file can even sometimes 'soft-brick' a device if it attempts to load it on start-up.

If you'd like TTS files for a US/EU firmware 2x5 let me know which ones you need, I have most of them available.

BTW, a Voice file packed into an RGN file can be unpacked using RGN_Tool.exe: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Thank you very much, that is helpful indeed. I searched across old forum posts and the most I got to was that lower devices like 2x5 use the 'RealSpeak Mobile' TTS engine whereas the higher end models use 'RealSpeak Solo'. There was otherwise very little information about these on the web in relation to Garmin GPS. Even information I gathered about RGN files were limited. Only now do I know about that RGN_Tool thanks to you.

From the voices in that site I gave, I think I may have already tried at least one TTS, TTS2 and TTS3 file (I might be mistaken) without success. So now I'm very curious what TTS version is the one for my model series.

Thanks! I am looking for TTS British English (or Irish, if it exists?) voices, I haven't actually heard all of them so I'd want to see all.
