Having now used both my brain, and a GPS for extensive driving in Thailand, the GPS wins 99% of the time. Navigating the Bangkok freeway system with a map is not to be recommended.
I have a Garmin 260, and am very happy with it. The voice announced street names feature is particularly handy if you normally wear glasses for reading ie you may have trouble getting a clear read of the GPS screen.
If and when I get a new GPS it will probably be a wide (4.3") screen, making it a bit easier to read, and with more detail.
I wouldn't recommend you buy the unit in Thailand. They are very expensive here - at least 50% higher than Australia for example.
