So I just went on a 500+ mile trip and wanted to give some examples of the benefits of Primo over iGo 8 in "real-world" situations:

First, while traveling on the PA turnpike, it super-easy to see how far the next few rest-areas are (there is a button on the main navigation screen for this when on highways) - so you know if you have to get gas now or can wait for a future rest-area to get gas (and maybe have to use the restroom by then). Helps reduce the number of stops during your trip by helping you combine gas/food/bathroom stops!

Much more importantly, when using a navigation system that lacks real-time traffic capabilities, like my car radio 2DIN unit, I come up upon dead-stop (or near stopped) traffic jams 3 times during my trip. With no input needed from me, Primo automatically pops up a window recognizing that I'm stopped (or going really slow) on the highway and offers an alternative route, which usually starts with an exit that you are very close to - and it also takes into account historical traffic pattens. This feature saved me from sitting in BAD traffic 3 times during my trip and offered alternative routes that I would have NEVER known of or even attempted with iGo 8. Saved me hours of time - and it's all 100% automatic. Awesome feature!!

I *love* having the ability to add new features with UX add-ons - I recently added UX add-ons to Primo that tell me when the speed limit increases or decreases (both with and without a route defined). These particular add-ons (as well as many others) are another fantastic feature that you can't get with iGo8. You can use them to customize Primo to your needs regardless of what skin you use - or even if you don't use any skin.

Even if iGo 8 *does* offer slightly better routing than Primo (which I really haven't noticed myself), that is a minor "con" compared to all of the "pros" of Primo. The Primo graphical display looks WAY better than iGO 8 (the screen was *so* nice while travelling through the PA mountains while using a good .dem file) and some of the useful features of Primo are just so beneficial during "real world" situations like I ran into during my trip.

When you know the area you are travelling in well, you can almost always pick a better route than a GPS application - but that's not when GPS is needed. When GPS is needed the most, is when you have no idea where you are or how to get where you are going - and that's when GPS is at it's best - it will ALWAYS get you where you are trying to go - even if it's not the "best" way.

For what it's worth, you can also customize the .lex file in Primo, just like you can in iGo 8, so that's a non-issue, IMO.

Nice review in my topic. :D

What is the .lex file? where is it?
I pretty much stick to my old version of primo, so I haven't heard of the UX. Tell me more.

Oops - sorry about posting this in your branding thread! :-) I thought this was a different thread where we were talking about the "best iGo app" because of the last few posts talking about Primo and iGo 8! Again, my apologies - I really did mean to post this somewhere else! :-)

But, since we're here now... The .lex file is a file that is used by the Loquendo TTS engine on WinCE (and maybe Android too?) that helps control how the TTS engine "says" certain things. For example, you can make the TTS engine say "JTrosky" when it sees "JT" (not very useful for automotive GPS, but just an example). Loquendo TTS 7 comes with an encrypted .lex file, but you can use the version provided with Loquendo 6 instead, which is a plain text version - so you can modify it as needed. For example, I had to make changes to make it say "miles per hour" instead of "MPH", "State Route" instead of "State Road", etc... If the GPS mis-pronounces anything, you can fix it in the .lex file. It's stored in the "tts_loq_7/languages/english" directory (for the english language) and it's called "EnglishUS.lex".

The UX files are basically "plug-ins" that can add additional features to Primo. You can find them on these forums - I *think* that started working in Primo 2.0. I probably have about 10-15 installed that do things like tell me when the speed limit changes, adding mapchanger functionality, voice toll both warning alerts, ability to change the car icon size, dynamic volume mod, etc... Just an easy way to add new functions to Primo easily.

If you'd like, I'll post some links to some UX add-ons and the plain text .lex file...

    Haha, it's all good.

I took a look into the UX addons and I have some of those options with the skin I use (Dimka). I'll take a closer look and see if there is anything else I can use.

I don't use TTS. I hate listening to someone telling me what to do all the time. :D

    zzyzxroad,

any closer progress on finishing up/fixing the "US branding" file?
It's been some time past and I was wondering if your still on board with this or is it not going to be avail in near future?

    Thx.

I'd love to go further with it, but apparently windows 7, and now 10 do not like the programs I use to make it. My computer is older, so I don't know if that makes a difference, but I have tried it on a newer laptop and still no go. I had the program once on my computer, and then when I added my icons to create the file I get an error and the program closes.

I tried to get it working with iGo 2.4, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out where the differences are between my icons, and an icon set that does work in 2.4.

Because of all this I've lost all motivation to finish all of the icons, including redoing some of the awful gas station icons.

I do have a version that would be slightly newer than what is posted here (I think). It's possible it has some more icons, and I made the petrol icons a little bigger. If you're interested I will upload it.

No problem. If I ever get my ass out of the dumps (regarding the software) I'll try to finish it better.

Let me know what you think. What's missing, or what you'd like to see. Maybe it will get me motivated again.

Thanks catymag for fixing my post. I must be blind because I didn't see where to attach it.
