While on the subject, is it possible to use a downloaded .img file with the newest firmware or are they just too locked down.I Use 'borrowed' maps all the time on my older Nuvi's but the 65LM refuses to use them on the newest firmware.

Yes it is possible but not legal to modify modern protected firmware to remove the restrictions. Google search for "Universal Firmware Patcher".

That's the procedure you followed previously as nicely detailed by smokefree. i.e. In brief, cure fw loaded, format with RMPrepUSB, original fw loaded and therefore it should have worked on first attempt without the nuvi 255 files onboard. One possibility is that you may have been mistakenly re-loading cure fw instead of original in the final step. Cure fw cannot boot a device, in fact that's the beauty of it. As a device boots normally it loads all the files needed to function and if even one of those files is faulty it cannot be loaded so the boot process stalls but usually Mass Storage Mode isn't available. Cure fw doesn't load any files so the boot process also stalls but with MSM available thus allowing corrupt files to be removed or a proper re-format to be done. Regardless of what is done to replace files or re-format until original fw is again loaded the device simply cannot boot fully.
