Neil,
Since I really don't know much about using RGN, I'd rather to get the original firmware from you, if you don't mind.
I'm finishing my ride and then will give it a try and of course will report back

I've told you how to make an RGN file from GCD file in Post #18. There's no such thing as an 'original' RGN file, Garmin only issues the fw as a GCD file for your device. Whether I make it for you or you do it yourself you'll end up with the same RGN file because i'll use RGN_Tool to make it too.

Ok, here it is:
Spoiler:
Extract the rar file to find 220401000300.rgn and if you need to go back to Explore, drag that onto Updater.exe then put the unit into preboot and flash as said before. I have to mention again that all the risk is yours regarding any of this as i can't control what you actually do.

after updater found the device I pressed the ok (while holding the lap button). but then I got the following message from updater:
The GARMIN device is not responding. Please ensure the following and try again:
1. The GARMIN decice's interface option is set to GARMIN or Host mode
2. The cable is connected to the correct serial port
3. The garmin device is turned on
It's exited preboot before the flash started. Some devices will stay in preboot for only a matter of 10 seconds so you must press OK on the GUI or hit enter key on keyboard immediately you see the device details appear in the window adjacent to 'USB Device'.

I am doing it as soon as it appears - very quickly - in fact I can manage repeating this three times before it is gone from the USB device...
errgggg... I guess it really does not want to be flashed... :-)

irousso, try to keep press the Lap / Reset key till the updating end.
Use onboard PC USB socket without Hub and extension cable.

That's good advice. In fact use only a REAR socket on your PC, and try other cables too.

It worked!!!!!
the problem was the extension cable. I've flashed it and now I have the Edge 1000 firmware... I took a picture - give me a sec to see where I can host it... to link it...
Neil - thank you very much for all of your help and patience as well as to the others who helped me!!
