So actually, the 3490 is "better" at showing POI's than the 3790.Quote:

Yes, I bricked one 34xx while flashing it with 37xx firmware. But that time I used 37xx boot.bin and also I messed up something with HWIDs. Maybe this was the reason.Quote:

As long as 34xx boot.bin is used and NV and the internal flash drive are backed up, it should be possible to restore nuvi 34xx to its original state.
Also 34xx bootloader should work with 37xx firmware, as it's prepared to launch a larger 34xx firmware.
But other problems could appear. For example, it seems that 37xx firmware supports less GPS chips than 34xx firmware.
Thanks Kunix for making it clear :)
I have to add this too: From a practical user's point of view there is no good reason to convert a 34xx to 37xx, but there are in reverse. From a curiosity point of view it is interesting that original 34xx can convert to 37xx though.
One thing that has come out of all the results posted here particularly in [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] is that any earlier belief that 34xx and 34xx are uniformally identical hardware is unfounded. It does seem that they are reasonably compatible so far as fw cross-flashing is concerned but counter-intuitively and anecdotally in my personal experience it seems that the earlier 37xx have a GPS chip which handles the 34xx fw better than the chip in later production runs, although some 'unsatisfactory experiences' may perhaps simply be to do with software enhancement of accuracy not working. My personal theory is that the sw 'tricks' do not work. 'Hotfix' appears not to work properly in converts for initial 'lock on', so it's maybe reasonable to assume that other sw enhancements also don't work and therefore the cherished and constant fabled '3 m accuracy' reported by original 37xx is nothing but an illusion anyway.
It is easy and safe to flash back and forth with the 'Dummies' method though, and this thread was well named by Caty as as being for 'Dummies' because no real knowledge of fw is required.Anybody not sure of, or confused by, the unit's slow sat. lock on and/or reported accuracy in their 37>34 convert should read the thread linked above in particular the comparative test results described, and then replicate them the see the actual 'practical' accuracy of their convert using both this 'dummies' and kunix's alternate method from the other thread.
There is a topic that covers the subject of accuracy Nuvi 3790 converted into 3490

Note by MOD: Thanks for advice ;) Is the same link of Neil in previous post:two is better than one ;))
I have flashed my 3790 to the 3490. Everything has gone just great, and I updated all the map files this morning to the latest version.
Since the conversion, I do not have the "Voice Command" icon in the Apps window.
I have tried everything, so it seems, and cannot find a solution to getting it back and the Voice Command working.
I did delete all the files in the .System\ASR\ directory and did a webupdate. No change and nothing was added to the ASR directory.
Can anyone give a hand please? Everything else works great, just no way to enable the Voice Command.
George
You must download ASR for 34xx in City Navigator thread or run again Mapupdater after conversion to 34xx if you have lifetime. ASR files are different in 34xx.
Thanks for the quick answer.
I ran GarminExpress this morning. All maps are version 2014.10
WebUpdater does not show any Voice files to download.
There are a lot of new files in .System\ASR\ directory.
None of them are the en_US or en_GB srd files
When I go to the Apps page, there is not anything there about selecting Voice Command
If there are files I need to download and install, can you give me a specific link to their location. I looked through the area you suggested and there is so much stuff there, I was not sure what to do.
I do have lifetime LMT
Thanks,
George
Voices are posted in starting post, after installing them run Webupdater to update them.
Edit: Probably you must download new keyboards and txt files too.
I can't seem to understand "Voices and the Starting Post"
I ran the MapUpdater, GarminExpress this morning and it downloaded all the new files.
Why do I need to download additional files?
I am very confused I guess!
Don't know what to do next.
George
