The SD method is by far the easiest way to convert a US/EU 37xx into a 34xx. GarminExpress will then continue to supply it with update map entitlements according to the device's (permanent) Unit ID and all other files according to its new HWID of 1376.
Latest fw for US/EU 3490 HWID series is indeed V8.50 issued on Jan 7, 2020. That likely will be the very final version issued for the series.
I believe you've mis-typed and mean that your 3790 is running V5.10.

Thanks, successfully working. RGN created from 8.50, flashed.
Completely different unit.

Profit to ask, should SmartPhone Link with this conversion? Can't seem to make it work
-
Yes it seems to work in converted devices, certainly with my Android but maybe the later iPhones lack support. However, the download QR code displayed in your device's "Apps>SmartPhone Link" might be out of date so just get the app directly for your phone type from the relevant store:
Code:

Once you've got the latest version of the SmartPhone app follow the prompts in the App on your phone to set up the BT connection with the nuvi. Officially I don't think Garmin cares much for supporting SmartPhone in older devices anyway, in this latest link the nuvi 3490 isn't listed at all for iPhone:

Argh I am on an iphone, device connects to bluetooth but smartphonelink can't see it.
In the past I had a 3597 if I recall correctly and it worked fine with the iphone

Yes, it seems nuvi 3597/8 is the only 3xxx series which can use SmartPhone Link in both OS types.
