    Topographic map

Few things to know about the map
This topographic map represents Ireland. It is designed for "hillwalking". The contour lines are extracted from SRTM public data provided by NASA. These files contain a digitized ground represented by points. The sample rate defines a grid resolution for Ireland around 90m in northing and 60m in easting. In major cases, digitized points do not correspond with summits. Carrauntoohil (1039m, the highest summit of Ireland) does not appear in SRTM data. The altitude reaches only 1018m.
Data were obtain from space with a radar. Because of the relative position between the radar and the earth, a shadow appears in some conditions (along ridges, behind summits...). This shadow matches with a gap in data (Imagine you with a flashlight in a dark room. It is hard to see what is in shadow). To close these gaps, you need other data or you can do interpolation. The second solution is applied in our case. There is one square degree per SRTM file with a sample rate of 1200x1200 points/square degree at Ireland latitude.
For smoother contour lines, oversampling with interpolation can help. This process is like erosion on mountains and it depends on what kind of interpolation is involved.
All in all you obtain contour lines pretty sufficient for walking.
Remember this : a map is not the ground, it is an abstraction which helps to define the place where you are.
    WARNING
Because of the nature even of the irish mountains and fast change of the weather conditions, hillwalking presents risks. Leave equipped, protect nature by keeping your waste, respect private properties.
A GPS receiver is only a secondary means for navigation. Map and compass remain necessary.
The author of the map ''Ireland'' declines any responsibility in the event of injury or worse, for any damage on your GPS and lost data.

This map was carried out with the authorization of use of MountainViews for summits data and The Scottish Mountaineering Club for other toponyms. Contour lines are built from SRTM data provided by NASA. Data for lakes, rivers, roads, urban areas come from OpenStreetMap.
    INSTALLATION & USE
To install the map, launch the setup program and follow the instructions. The Map will be available into your Mapsource product.
To upload the map in your GPS, use sendmap or a Mapsource product. To adjust level of details, do it in the maps menu on your GPS.

    TIPS
The map is made with many layers. Some of them are transparent ad can be displayed with Mapsource products. To display them or not, adjust your map settings in GPS menu.
Levels of details are tuned for "normal" setting. To display more details, adjust your map settings in GPS menu.
