Default 1490 Skin Change, noob questions

Hi, so i have an old 1490 LTM, I'd like to customize its appearance...

fully updated 2025 using garmin express.

    pcb 105-01617-11 ver 7

    SW ver 6.30 nuvi 1490 i KP1 V7 LC 4GB

I have been wading through old forums on the wayback machine, and found some useful tools, RGN_Editor, GIR_Editor, TTS_Voices editor etc. I have extracted the symbols/icons, from the GUPDATE.GCD file.

I thought I'd ask on here before attempting to go much further, I figured it's better to ask first how to do it, than try to fix it once it's bricked.

I've been able to access some of the hidden menus, via the battery symbol and the speedo face. However I haven't been able to put it into MSM mode. Although when plugged into a linux machine all files are accessible.

So, using the the RGN_Tool i extracted the .bin files. Then using GIR_Editor i extracted the symbols from fw1_resources.bin.

Can i just replace the images, then recompile the GUPDATE.GCD file (from the three bin files) and replace it with the original one on the nuvi?

Or do I need to force it to update.

I have also downloaded the updater.exe and the USBDrivers_2312.exe should i need them.

    ...think that's it, thanks

Before you do anything, make a backup of the internal files system. If using windows, make sure to enable it to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Also as an absolute minimum, make a backup of its [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], although i'd make a full region backup, 1-255: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Regarding MSM mode, provided a PC has Garmin USB Drivers loaded the internal files will be browsable when the device is connected.

Regarding loading a modded GCD, it might work however you'd need to increase the Version from 6.30 to 6.31 for it to be flashed on the device. You may have to convert the GCD to an RGN file and flash in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] instead.
