You will be Fine with 700mA, If it is not you won't see it show it is on external PSU.
Hi,
I want to connect my Etrex to a USB power adapter, when you do this are you able to use the GPS in a no mass storage mode (have access to all the features) ? i have read you need DC 5V 1A max wich is the power adapter that Garmin sells : [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] is it possible to use some other power adapter (like 5V 700ma) ? i'm asking as i don't want to fry the GPS !

Thank you !
Hello, so it did work fine with 5V 700ma, i am wondering does the Etrex has a protection in case there would be a higher current (higher than 1A) ?
@mustelidae
Electronic devices generally will only draw as much current as they require to charge and/or operate regardless of the supply capability of the source. You could connect even a 5VDC 5Amp PSU without problem.
Yes a device only draws what it needs, if the supply is say 500ma and the device needs 600ma the supply will go into current limit and shut down. So don't panic the Supplies are rated for Maximum output, not put more power in than the device needs.

@mustelidae,
I have been using Etrex for years.
They run on 2 2450 NI-MH Batteries.
Never have recharged the Batteries on the unit.
I keep a portable charging unit with me and 2 extra 2450 NI-MH Batteries as a backup.
These Etrex units are good for 12 to 25 hours using NI-MH batteries.
Have never run out of power doing a long hikes that last 2 to 3 days with a group of hikers.
Why do you need to be on electric power to use the Etrex??
If I need to update and GPX tracks I just plus the Etrex into my Laptop and update that goes for the maps too.
