Have you got v3.50 fw? It had shutdown issues. From the Garmin changelog:
Upgrade to current v3.90 if you have an earlier version but 1690 is region specific so make sure you use the correct region fw. See [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].Changes made from version 3.50 to 3.60:
Fixed issues that could potentially cause memory corruptions and unit shutdowns.

HI Neil
Checked "Garmin Device! ...........PartNumber>006-B1132-00</PartNumber><SoftwareVersion>390</
SoftwareVersion><Description>nvi 1690</Description>
So I used Garmin Cure to install Original GCD from your earlier link (nuvi16xxEU_regionfileonly__390.gcd)
Everything installed Ok , But the shutdown still occurs when I press "System"
Tried pressing all other icons and it's OK ,just the System icon which has the problem
Yeah, the 1690 is a flaky bit ofi'm afraid. I just turned mine on .. it ... sat ..... there .... sulking ...... forever saying 'Loading Maps'. So i forced it off. Sticking on loading maps like that is usually a sign that the unit is bricked. But not the mighty 1690, it just has a mind of it's own. Next press of the on button and it happily booted up.
Try clearing NV. Go to Map screen, press 'Speed' > press and hold the Speedometer for ~6 seconds > Developer Info > Nonvol Available > Clear Nonvol > Yes. A little more comprehensive than a hard reset so worth a try. Or throw it at a wall, either is good ...... ['cos it's just a piece of cr*p!]
PS: Don't actually throw it at a wall, wall damage may result.

Hi
just tried clearing NON Vol .....Still the same !
Shame really ,I have 2 of these and the other one works fine , never any problems & this one has been OK up to now !!
Just another point , when I went to the Speedo page , the speedo was blank [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Wondered if this may indicate anything ?

No, that is normal after a hard reset/clear nonvol. Put it in simulation mode and then it will show 0 kmh or 0 mph. Mine also shows -20m elevation at present [oh but it were]. Mate, sorry but these really are flaky units, numerous resets/clear non-vol may help it or you could try opening the unit and disconnecting the battery for a while.

Hi neil , thanks for the info
I am new to flashing "logo Bin" , I will search for an idiots guide on how to do it & see how it goes
Thanks again
Try to delete all files from Nuvi then create an empty folder named Garmin "Backup first of course" and see if something changes.
In other words boot the Nuvi empty to eliminate a corrupt file.
