I see a 50LM "US lower 48 lifetime maps" in a 2nd hand shop with a mount. I need some quick and dirty.
1- can the mapping region be expanded just by putting maps on the sdcard? (it has a slot)
2-if so, can i just put an unlocked map in root \garmin to test it? will it display without the jvc's and such?
3-if that's okay, will the usual CNNA maps with these supplementary files (jvc, asr, etc) work in this or is it different?
it's $35 so i don't think it'll last.
thanks...
Thanks.
I played with it for about 10 minutes in the shop and didn't see anything wrong, then a friend did the same. It was put on a charger when i played with it and the battery meter went up in that time. The unit didn't look like it was dropped or anything. I'll run out tomorrow to grab it if it's still there..
1. It's LM for the US Lower 48 States, so you only need to add the rest of whatever else you need for NA [Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico can be cut from the full NA recommended by dasilvarsa with MS or BaseCamp/MapInstall] as a separate map on a microSD. So long as it's the same version, you can even add the full NA to the card as the data will be the same. Don't mix different versions covering the same map areas thought.
2. I would not put any such 'unofficial' maps in the unit of course. If you only have one extra map it can go in sd:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img. Note capital 'G' in the folder name. Or you can create a root folder Map [capital 'M'] and put the extra map/s in there as 'anyname'.img e.g. CNNT_2014.10_Rest-of-NA.img, *CA.img, *MX.img etc as a more descriptive title. It/they will display ok but without JCV because the unit's present file is going to be the 'US only' JCV supplied with the Lifetime maps [for US Lower 48 2014.10 it's D3479080A.JCV i think].
3. You will need the full NA JCV to get the other JCV's so that means replacing your US only one with D3478080A.JCV from Post #22 of the map thread. Don't have both, not even one on the unit and one on the card. Don't bother with ASR. Nuvi 50 does not have speech recognition.
35 smackers is a bargain if it's in good nick with LM so i'd grab it quick. Even if it's still registered to someone else you can get Garmin to re-register it and register it to you, but I wouldn't bother.
Just use Mapupdater not Garmin Express and you won't have a problem upgrading .

Hey, thanks for the extra details. I'm going to quickly toss AK, and HI on a card and see what it does...basically checking the slot becasue the unit, as is, would be usless so me and and most people Iknow as you can see from my location. going to set the alarm for this becasue i need to leave town for the day too. thanks again.
got it. I finally had some time to play with it today and it was worth buying. the sdcard maps work fine but you were right about overlapping maps, some mapped areas just didn't look right, i think it was from conflicting map data from more than one product. Now i just need to find a use for it so it doesn't end up in the "trinket of the month" pile. haha. Thanks again.
Just check that you have exactly the same versions of the overlapping maps and there won't be any conflict. By that i mean make sure the microSD's CA/AL map is the same FID as the unit's Lifetime US Lower49 map because it then won't matter at all if you also have the US Northern border states included in your CA map in that case. [Same data = no conflict]. If there are no overlapping tiles though you can use different versions for US and CA, same with MX.

Takes the same screen as a 1490 or 1450 and the screens are not expensive. No traffic capability or Bluetooth on this unit that I have found. The 50LM is a stripped down version of the 1450. The weakness is the on-off button assembly and the fragile Garmin charger port. The on-off assembly is light duty and tends to break away from the case. Not found any way to fix it. Non working ones sell for $35 on the bay so sounds like you have got a good deal.
Well, I just bought another one for $23 from the same place. It's also US-lower48 only. I have no idea what i'm going to do with it but i couldn't walk away from it. This one came with a generic non-garmin car adaptor but it seems to work so i'm okay. The only thing missing is the ball side of the mount but i've seen those for $5-6 so i didn't care too much.
Try $1.90 posted worldwide. These generic ones are fine mostly. If i ever buy a 'cheapie' on ebay w/o a mount i just order the cheapest available at the time if i intend moving it on or giving it away.
Haha. A fellow 'sucker for a bargain', good on you. I'd have bought it too @ 23 bux even though i already have both 40LM NA and 50LM AU and generally hate the series [i reckon Redrock3 was being too nice about 50s].Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
