Wow, great info, I'll try this on a Zumo 550 when I get a chance.
A new trick on nuvi 1xxx series
The nuvi 1xxx series has the advantage/ability to load any number of maps from it's internal memory. Simply create a folder in the root of the nuvi drive called "Map" (no quotes) and copy your desired map into that folder. The map does NOT have to be called gmapsupp.img nor any of the older nuvi naming conventions...in this case you should give it a more descriptive name such as Topomaps.img (or anything else for that matter). The only stipulation is that it ends with the .img extension.This trick works on SD Cards too
Best regards

"Proceed as the way opens"
On the Garmin Oregon you can call your microSD card maps whatever you want, so as long as they end in .img they will be recognised as seperate maps - easy! The only limitation is the 4 GB maximum for all maps.
I think he meant each map mustnt exceed 4GB
You have to navigate to get to the good.
Galaxy S5 Kitkat 4.4.2 / Nuvi1200->1250 / Nuvi3790T->34xx / Nuvi 2200 / Nuvi 66 / Oregon 600
Danilone i've tried to use the original map names as you have done on my zumo 660 and microsd works fine
thats great news.. so in zumo, on its SD card, the name of the map file does not matter?
I am new to GPS and just got a Nuvi 3790 a month back. Have been learning how to use it and this site is among the most useful and helpful.
Would like to share my experience with the Nuvi 3790. In the MicroSD card, under the /Map directory, multiple maps with any filename can be used simultaneouslySo long the file extension is .img (eg MapOfMyCountry.img), the device will recognise the maps.
Gmapsupp.img is recognized probably just in sd "Garmin" folder, just one in Garmin folder-
The only wrinkle is that for this to work, it depends on how the maps (files) are transferred to the MicroSD card :-
1) If the files are transferred by copying from a PC directly to the MicroSD card which is then inserted into the device, then the device must be shut down (ie not set to Sleep) and restarted. Do this by depressing the Power button for about 4 secs. The message "Turn Off the device?" appears . Tap on "Off" and the device shuts down. Start the device again by pressing the Power button. The devices power up and the text "GARMIN" appears and then goes through the start up process. After the device has restarted, go to Tools > Settings > myMaps. The newly copied files can be seen in the list. Check the maps you want enabled in the device.
2) The files can also be transferred with the MicroSD card inserted in the device and the device connected to the PC via the USB cable. In this instance, when the device is disconnected from the PC, the device will shut down automatically. Pressing the Power button will restart it and the new files can be seen as per the above.
Hi, does any one know what is the memory card size limitation for the nuvi 1490? Thanks
