Yes, this is something I will probably explore next - but am not sure if I used this freebie before though... Something tells me that I might have, prior to yearly subscription that I had back in 2016 or 2017.

EDITED TO ADD: Just spoke to Gramin, who confimed that I'm eligible for 30 days Cyclops trial for this device, so there's that. Also, they logged the problem and will investigate in background - and will await my update once the latest Cyclop files are installed on the device.

Garmin Express does not present the Trial option if you have already used one.

Don't forget to remove the unlocked .gpi files you have downloaded previously so the test will be accurate with only the Europe Trial Safety Cameras ,also Garmin will ask for various files that will show you have downloaded them.

    So a quick hot-on-the-heels update:

    1. Satnav entirely out of the blue gave me camera warnings during my trip today - and without being restarted since the last trip last week. It was connected via BT to my phone also.
It's at odds with the previous behaviour when it was consistently silent and had to be powered down for the warnings to reappear.

I do wonder if the chap @ Garmin has done anything his end during my chat with him last week though, because...

    2. ...because I just found out in the satnav's Smartlink app menu - never ventured there before really as I was never interested in any of these 'live' features - that real-time safety cameras warnings (via BT) are proudly present there (and also shown as FoC...).
Again, it's at odds with what Garmin advises on their web pages, but I did see inconsistences before so if this unit is not listed there, that doesn't mean it would not support this feature.

So it would appear that safety camera warnings SHOULD work for me 100% with BT enabled & Smartllink connectivity in place.
It still does not tell me anything about PoI (GPI) files - although if they're seen by the device, they also should work all the time.

As the results are not exactly conclusive I will carry on with my tests, with and without BT enabled...

Righto, an update here. Will be quicker if I just copy & paste (with alterations and additional commentary) my latest e-mail to Garmin Support:

So to sum up and recap:

    • My original issue – that prompted my phone call to you guys few weeks ago - was that my nuvicam seemingly does not warn about safety cameras when it’s merely resumed from sleep, rather than fully restarted
    • I have been using both nuvicam & my phone with BT on recently to ensure I can attend the calls during my commute to/from work. I’ve not done this in the past really as there was no need for me to do so
    • It would appear that establishing Smartlink connection over BT is a bit temperamental – do not know if this is my phone’s, its internet connectivity (I use VPN), Smartlink app, or nuvicam fault. I was not paying attention to this connectivity at all though up until last week
    • Last week we both confirmed that nuvicam supports – out of the blue – safety camera warnings over the Smartlink connection (them also being FoC). I was not aware of that fact, as I’ve not seen this changed couple of years back (I got this device in 2016). And this may have obfuscated what I was seeing and my reasoning / investigations to date.

So Garmin obviously has not managed to get all their web pages updated, doh!

Device does support - FoC either - both traffic updates and real-time safety cameras via BT/Smartlink - as mentioned in the (updated in 2020) manual. Links:

    Live traffic updates:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    Real-time safety camera updates:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links

    So it therefore appears that:

    • Nuvicam fully functions as expected and reads/works with safety camera warnings via PoI files when BT is switched off / no connection via BT/Smartlink to my phone. And this is regardless of nuvicam being resumed from sleep, or fully restarted
    • Nuvicam also support safety camera warnings via BT/Smartlink App when both BT and Smartlink connectivity is in place. Again, this is regardless of nuvicam being resumed from sleep, or fully restarted
I can tell the difference as these warnings vary a bit between both, although they happen in the same places on my route
    • I believe that there might be a problem with safety camera warnings not happening at all, when there’s only BT connectivity in place (so Smartlink connection fails for some reason and does not want to be reinstated), and only after nuvicam is resumed from sleep either.

Picture showing how it pans out in my device enclosed:

The behaviour I am seeing is definitely down to the device's software (an edge case, I gather). Your safety camera files you regularly supply are definitely good.

Quick follow up here: having just returned from extensive travelling across Europe I need to confess that the sample GPI files - as regularly & kindly shared via another thread in this forum - probably do not work at all...?

Since my previous contribution - so at the end of last year - I've been using my GPS during rather boring commute, twice a week either. I also did have and utilise connection via BT with Smartlink on my phone. So that means that any cameras that my satnav reported were 'sourced' live, from Garmin servers.

Now, it just so happened that during one leg of a journey in Europe I did forget to re-enable Smartlink connection - and my satnav remained suspiciously silent, to that extent that I almost bravely exceeded the speed in a place I knew camera's present...!

Is there any way to have these files verified in some way?

Meanwhile I just acquired 1-year subscription from Garmin and will play with nuvicam settings again.

EDITED TO ADD: SO after my trip today I can confirm that safety cameras (as obtained via subscription last week) do work correctly regardless of my satnav having been fully restarted, or just put down to sleep and awoken again. Also, having the satnav connected via BT (but without Smartlink in place) does not seem to cause any problem either.

So I daresay these trial Safety Camera POIs - that are regularly & kindly shared via another thread in this forum - probably do not work correctly at all, at least with my satnav.
