There are a lot cheap chinese cards that do not conform SD specification and doesn't support locking commands.
Thanks for the advise. I will borrow/buy another SD card and try - for testing purposes can I just use any password? I use the Ubuntu from the first post in the thread and boot into that. Just followed the guide.

Ignores the error messages if they are some, especially this:

"ioctl: Connection timed out - Could not read response to SEND_STATUS from /dev/mmcblk0"
Do not be disappointed - everything is alright!

"ioctl: Connection timed out" - It is a proper report from the system
    - when you lock the card, it is immediately invisible to the system
and system report, that can not connect to SD card !

"Could not read response to SEND_STATUS from /dev/mmcblk0"
    - also right - system could not read response on query on the status from SD card.

Remove and reinsert SD card to check lock - when system not recognize, so its locked.
    Try in a car.

I managed to lock a 2 GB SD-card - so my PC works, however now I can't get the card unlocked - I tried the commands in the first post of the thread in the modded Ubuntu from the same post:

    sudo -s

    echo erase> /sys/bus/mmc/devices/mmc0*/lock

    And I got the message:

bash: echo: write error: Connection timed out

But when I try to format the card the Ubuntu disk tools says: "Error synchronizing after formatting with type `vfat': Timed out waiting for object (udisks-error-quark, 0)"

and the card remains locked. Any good advise, it is a bit sad to loose a good SD card for every update, and I don't have a Nokia.

If you are going to work with these cards constantly, i would suggest to you use special device for locking/unlocking card, not a Linux. It's much faster and easier to work.

Just trying to get one card to work :-), but it would be sad to through out a working card after each update just because it is locked.

Did anyone try out the tools here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]? - I don't know Ubuntu, but it seems like it has tools for both lock, unlock and erase of locked cards.
