app works good but when phone screen is off the app shuts down. why is this?

Why would you turn off the screen while using any GPS app.
What were you going to do is hit the power button to get the screen back on to known when to exit?

You keep the screen on at all times when using a GPS app.

Yes agree with Asprin624 " why would you do that ????" the phone goes into sleep mode when you turn the screen off but is enabled only by Phone calls.
The apps still carry on but at a lower level I use an App that records my trails as I'm Metal Detecting and I turn on screen to mark a point and have to wait for it to draw the trail and show location.

It works for me.
When I drive with the motorcycle, I have the phone in my jacket pocket, screen is of course switched off, sound combined with Bluetooth to the helmet speakers.
Works wonderfully.
