Default Which to use? Basecamp, Mapsource, Mapinstall, Gmaptool

Can anyone explain the difference between these software tools ... Basecamp, Mapsource, Mapinstall, Gmaptool ... and which to use each program for? What are the latest versions of each?

I have recently updated to a Montana 650 & have Basecamp. I am still trying to figure out how to get maps made for Mapsource into Basecamp.
I have searched, read everything I can find but no luck with most Garmin maps.
Anybody have a link to how this is done?
    Thanks

Basecamp reads IMGs and all the maps installed in Mapsource.
To see an .img in Basecamp:
Copy your .img in a Garmin folder in an sd and plug your sd in your pc, open Basecamp and select the map in your sd library ,right click and click show map.
    read this too

Thanks 'catymag' I managed to get that to work. But it doesn't get the maps into Basecamp (the map (OZ & NZ Topo) ) so I can use it on the PC...i have to remove the microSD from the Montana every time I want to use it in Basecamp. I have Canada Topo installed into Basecamp, but I think it was an installer that did it.

    I will keep reading & searching...try...try...again :-).

You may be misunderstanding what BaseCamp can do with images. It can only 'see' *.img files loaded directly onto a Garmin device or on a microSD/SD card inserted in it or one attached directly to your computer, or on a 'virtual SD card' on your computer. You can load so-called 'MapSource' (.gmap folder) files to work with in BaseCamp and send a map img to devices and [micro]SD's using Mapinstall, and that is probably how your Canada Topo was installed [although most Topos are now purchased as downloaded img files or on ready-made microSDs]. Read up on the stuff Caty suggested and if you don't understand something, just have a good play around with the files and program 'hands on' and read BC Help before posting again for specific help.
