Historically, all these countries were described as part of Eastern Europe, due to them belonging to Warsaw Pact (Soviet led counterpart to NATO). Being behind "Iron curtain", former East Germany, Poland, Czechoslowakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Soviet Union were called commonly Eastern Europe. Former Yugoslavia (now 6 independent countries) were also thrown into that bucket despite never being member of Warsaw Pact, but having same Slavic heritage (Romanians and Hungarians, and East Germans, are not of Slavic origin).
When most of this historic fact are now forgotten, it doesn't make sense to refer to them all as Eastern Europe, because most of them, geographically, are certainly not there.
