I loaded my modified GUPDATE.GCD (with all 'Deutsch' replaced) into the RGN Tool and changed the SW Version
in the program from 2.50 to 2.51 and saved it with the same name. I then copied this to the Nuvi (after removing
the original GUPDATE.GCD) and rebooted it.

Perhaps I should have made it 5.01 since the original was 5.00 but I assumed that 'a change' is 'a change'.

It did tell me that it was an older version and after I had acknowledged this it proceeded.

Finally it reported SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING and will not continue or acknowledge any USB connection.
Apart from GARMIN these are the only words on the black startup screen.

    Where did I go wrong?

Yes, I suggested to change it by 1. 5.01 would have been best if you had 5.00.

Still, no reason to panic (yet!) at this time. You need to find out how to put the 270 in pre-boot/service mode. It generally involved booting the unit with a finger somewhere or locking the unit with the power button and connecting the USB cable at the right time. Just start another post in the right Garmin section and ask how to do it. It may also be in the tutorial area here.

I never really paid attention on how to boot the GPS when there is a bad GCD on the flash, but it can be done. Maybe from the SD flash card or with a cure firmware. Again, there are people on this site that did it. We just need to get the information.

Sorry just got back.....Pool night......couldn't find the way home home without the Nuvi

I'll try to sort it out tomorrow.

I did try earlier today thinking that the Garmin WebUpdater might be able to reinstall it but the
message was "update file is corrupt".

OK, the 270 is back in the land of the living again.

I'll try again, but perhaps I should ask if I need to set the Nuvi into service mode
before I use uploader.exe to load up the new 5.01 version of GUPDATE.RGN?

Or perhaps I shouldn't use uploader.exe and just copy the new GUPDATE.GCD over instead?

Just asking BEFORE I screw it up again.

I am glad to hear your GPS is back from the deads.

If you plan to use the .RGN method with updater.exe, you need first to remove the GUPDATE.GCD from your GPS. Connect with the USB and remove this file. It is of no use anyways no matter what you do or will do in the future. Also, if you use the RGN method in service mode, no need to change any version what so ever. Updater.exe will always force the update regardless of the SW Version. It always safer not to change it.

Now, the first thing to ask yourself is "Why did it fail in the first place?". What did you replace Deutsch by? Something longer? Shorter? I know you replaced all the strings (both the regular string and unicode). It may be too much. I would scan the GCD (or fw_all.bin) again and look carefully to those strings. I would change only the ones that seems to be related to the non-TTS voices. The one that is definitively to change is the one that precedes R.E.C.0.0.2 (in unicode). I would start with only that one and add more as needed.

Edit: there is a second interesting D.e.u.t.s.c.h._ occurrence just above the following string:

    2...0.0...0.0.6.-.D.0.8.1 .1.-.0.0...N.e.t.h.e.r.l.a.n.d.s

Note: if you use the GCD method again, just start with a fresh unmodified GCD. Modify the file as mentioned above, open in RGN_Tool and just increase the SW Version by 1 (last digit). Save to GUPDATE.GCD and copy to the GPS. Reboot. If the upgrade works, but you do not have the expected result, the next GCD file should be back to the previous version (like 5.0.0 if you went to 5.0.1). Everytime an update succeeds, you have to change the last digit of the version. So, do +1, then -1, then +1, etc... This way, you will not get to 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.0.3, ...

Thanks for your replies again Turbo.

I replaced the D.e.u.t.s.c.h. with P.i.e.r.r.e. which was one letter shorter so I added an extra 5F and 00 (hex)
in the places where the "_" appeared to be used or just 00 were they didn't. I'll start again looking for the R.E.C.0.0.2

I've tried using the "Pierre Pissant" voice for Polski, Deutsch and Ruski and noted that some directions are spoken
incorrectly. For instance he will say "Turn in .. Feet". He misses both the "number" and "hundred". A quick test seem to
reveal that French-Canadian is OK with these, so I'll move my experments to this language. Australian English would
seem to be a better choice but I don't have the Aussie.vpm to find out the Language byte. (anybody know?)

There also appears to be only one occurance of the words " Français Canadien" which is how it appears on the display
(WITH the cidilla under the letter ç ) so I'll just change that one first.

I mentioned before that I first tried to revive the 270 using Garmin's WebUpdater and received the message "update
file is corrupt". Thinking that perhaps this may mean that their file was corrupt I reported the error to Garmin.
    Today I received this reply.......

Unfortunately, it does appear that you will have to send your unit in to be replaced.
The device will be booked in under warranty, so there will be no cost to you.

Please could you forward me the following details?

    Full Name:
    Contact Number:
    Email Address:
    Address:

When I receive the details, I will provide you with all necessary information regarding sending the unit in.

Now, although seems to be a very good offer, I can't believe that they would replace free my four year old Nuvi 270.
How long is the warranty? Do they want it for their museum? What's going on?

I agree, it is a strange offer. If the 270 is discontinued, maybe they will give you a newer model... Did they know it was a 4-years old model?

Very strange.......so I've sent them my details........and asked them to confirm "under warranty and no cost to me".

I did register the unit with them when I first bought it new. They must know that the 200 series has been discontinued.

If I do send it back then I'll need to set it back to "SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING" which shouldn't be a problem.

    Meanwhile, I'll continue my experiments.

OK......IT WORKS.......the "Français Canadien" has now been replaced by "Pierre" on the display.

I only changed the one entry in GUPDATE.GCD which was in the list of language names located
at 59B2E7 (from F.r.a.n.ç.a.i.s. .C.a.n.a.d.i.e.n to P.i.e.r.r.e) from and padded the remainder of the name out with 00s.

Method used in case anyone else wants to use it (nonTTS only)....

Edit GUPDATE.GCD as above using an hex editor...load into turbo's RGN_Tool.....increase SW ID
by 1 (for me from 500 to 501)...save as GUPDATE.GCD

Edit the "language byte" in your new name.vpm at hex 12 to the language byte used in the language_name.vpm
which you would like to replace (0F for French Canadian)

Copy to GUPDATE.GCD and new name.vpm to Garmin
.....delete the language.vpm you are replacing (or new name will display in the list twice) and reboot.

Thanks for all your help turbo.......incidentally do you know the 'language byte" for Australian-English
since I'll like to replace some more of my voices with real names using the same method.

UPDATE.....found all the bytes......they are in the same order as the byte number in GUPDATE.GCD.
    American-Eng = 00, Deutsch = 01, Francais = 02 .......Netherlands = 08..........British-Eng = 0E etc
    which means that Australian-English = 10
