Lightbulb 1. TomTom Go Live 1005

    xl tomtomgolive1005 624

A 5-inch crisp screen places the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] at the top of its game for size and clarity. A free year of TomTom’s Live services is included with every device so although the subscription adds to your costs after the first year, this sat nav is certainly worth its initial price tag.

TomTom Go Live 1005 price: £220 + £47 per year, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Lightbulb 2. Mio Spirit 687

    xl miospirit687 624

Subscription free with a 5-inch screen, as well as Google Local Search and four route options to choose from. Not-quite-bold-enough map graphics are a let-down but at only £150, this is a deal that cannot be missed if you’re not up for dropping that extra £50-100 on a better sat nav.

Lightbulb 3. TomTom Go Live 1000

    xl tomtomgolive1000 624

No longer top of the range and lacking the larger screen of the 1005, the TomTom 1000 can be viewed as a bit of a bargain especially with its crisp HD display and reliable navigation. Don’t forget the years free Live services.

TomTom Go Live 1000 price: £193 +£47 per year, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Lightbulb 4. Mio Spirit 685

    xl miospirit685 624

Extremely fast GPS and a smooth touchscreen, basic services for a very low price. The great 5-inch screen makes this basic sat nav more than worth its low price, but a lack of extra features doesn’t put it at the top of our list.

Mio Spirit 685 price: £128, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Lightbulb 5. TomTom Via Live 120

    xl tomtomvialive120 624

A fairly large screen albeit without the clarity of higher-end TomTom models, and a built-in mount make this sat nav functional if not our favourite. The free year of brilliant Live services is good enough to slot this device squarely mid-market.

TomTom Via Live 120 price: £140 + £47 per year, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Lightbulb 6. Garmin Nüvi 2360LT

    xl garminnuvi2360 624

User-friendly, crisp mapping at a great price and free traffic updates to boot. It’s a solid and functional device but an unsightly receiver that plugs into the car’s lighter socket is a definite let-down.

Garmin Nüvi 2360LT price: £159, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Lightbulb 7. Garmin Nüvi 3790T

    xl garminnuvi3790t 624

One of the only truly great-looking sat navs out there, and slimmer than an iPhone 4, the 3790T even has free traffic updates for life to go along with its great photo-real mapping graphics. Unfortunately a hefty price tag lets the device down.

Garmin Nüvi 3790T price: £300, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Lightbulb 8. TomTom Go 950 Live

    xl tomtomgolive950 624

Easy to navigate, accurate traffic updates and smooth design, albeit a little outdated. Just one of many reasons why TomTom are leading the market on sat navs, even with more basic devices. As with other TomTom Live devices, a free year of great Live services is hard to turn down.

TomTom Go 950 Live price: £205 + £47 per year, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Lightbulb 9. Garmin Nüvi 1690

    xl garminnuvi1690 624

Lots of modern features on this device, including one free year of the 3G-based nüLink live information which you can receive in up to 17 EU countries. It’s a speedy device but the interface is overly complex and awkward.

Garmin Nüvi 1690 price: £144 + £70, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
