Default WinCE video not working on wake from sleep

    Help Please,

I'm going on holiday next week and my previously trustworthy No-name Chinese WinCE device has developed a new fault.

When I stop during a journey and turn off the engine cutting power to the GPS, it counts down a few seconds then shuts down to a sleep mode. When power is restored it wakes up, the boot screen flashes briefly, then it continues navigating normally. This is how it has always worked, no matter how many stops I make on my journey.

Now this only works on my first stop!

If I make a second stop, the GPS restarts when power is restored but the screen freezes on the boot image. In all other respects the device works: it continues to navigate correctly and give spoken directions as expected, but always displaying the boot screen. It even sleeps and restarts when power is disconnected and reconnected but I have to completely close it down and restart to get the navigation screen back. No Crash.txt log is generated when this happens.

So far I have tried several different versions of Primo 2.0 and 2.4, formatting the internal memory before each install, but the problem persists. I have also installed the exact same software on 2 other devices, one identical to mine and one of another make, and both of them worked perfectly. This seems to eliminate the software as the cause of the problem.

Now I am stumped. It seems to be a problem loading the video driver but why only on second and subsequent restarts? Does anyone have any ideas please?

It is not a problem with software then with unit itself. Hardware (or firmware in rare cases).
The memory chip does not store data. Or the internal battery of the device has been weakened (if it exists), or the chip itself started to denounce.

Or it could be faulty battery.
    Try to change it first.

Thanks @Boki_Srb and @Midnight Blues for your suggestions.

I have just done a test: with the battery fully charged the device ran for 75 minutes in daytime with the screen at maximum brightness, then the low battery warning came up. I guess that means I can eliminate the battery as the problem.

That just leaves firmware or the device itself. I will borrow my friend's identical unit and see if I can find a way to copy his operating system. I'm not even certain this is possible, lots of nonsense about WinCE on the internet when I google for it

This will have to be after my holiday as I don't want to brick my device and have to find my way through the Pyrenees with paper maps!

Actually, I did not mean the main battery of the device. Devices of this type always have CMOS battery, independent or in the form of a capacitor.
Personally, I mostly doubt that the RAM chip has become... "less functional". Regardless of lack of power supply, it would have to keep data for some time.
Then the doubt goes to battery, then to firmware. But, who knows...

Where is the program installed to? If it's the SD card have you replaced the SD card with a new one and have done a format? Sleep problems were happening with Igo8 programs. It seems that the connection to the SD card had to re-start as well because it was originally lost when putting the device to sleep. This is just a thought.

    Thanks for your advice.
I usually run the programme from internal memory with content on an SD card.
I have now tried with everything on newly formatted internal memory and the SD card completely removed, and also with everything on a newly formatted SD card and internal memory wiped.
    Always the same result.
I guess that must mean its a firmware fault and I shall have to live with it for this trip and maybe buy a new device if it really bothers me.
    Thanks again

Its been a long time but I have finally found a solution. If anybody with the same problem finds this thread, I added

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
to sys.txt and now the device works perfectly again.

Without this entry in sys.txt, you can use iGO normally. If you return to the car after a break, turn on the engine and the navigation displays the start screen, press the lower left corner of the screen (as if you wanted to press the MENU button) and then the navigation screen will return.
