I tried and I can confirm that it sounds too good to be true.
I decided to replace only Switzerland data for a start
First POI I replaced poi completely and unit rejected it:

I renamed map to xxx_old and copied new data but somehow unit found renamed map and loaded it:

File structure on SD card is following:
    -device.nng
    -iGO
    --license
    ---FTEN_14CY_EU_SUB<at>13Q3.lyc
    --content
    ---global_cfg
    ---lang
    ---map
    ---phoneme
    ---poi
    ---scheme
    ---voice
    ---vr
    ---vr_vde

I guess somehow each file hash is stored in license file but I would appreciate any help

To use new maps (and other content) you need cr*cked version of software.
Renaming files has nothing to do with it. You can give the name you want (USS Enterprise for example), information is read from the file itself.

Forget about licenses (hash or whatever). Read a little bit more, and you will know why.

Thanks @Boki_Srb I read a bit about cracking SW and it looks like it is not possible if there is no executable file on SD card.
I couldn't find any info on how you can do it on system which probably executes from internal storage like car head unit.

Do you know about anybody succeeding in cracking head unit iGO SW?

It is not the point in cr*cking head unit software
The simplest way is to access its internal memory, and replace it with good proven version (Primo 2, or 2.4 serie, depends on current setup).

The main problem is whether int memory can be accessed at all.
For such a thing it is best to seek help in a specialized forum for a specific year and model of cars and HU.

Boki_Srb do you know such a forum, It seems to be quite hard to find
Updating HU firmware requires files prepared by Subaru:

I've cloned my original FTEN_14CY_AUS_SUB@13Q3_2 SD card using dd under linux, and then overwritten the content directory with new files - no success. I haven't tried modifying the original card content directory - if that fails, and restoring the original content doesnt work I have a bricked Navigation system :|
