    cityxplorer GPS apk for walking

So I have IGO nextgen on my PND and now one of my phones. Great for driving places....

The phone has way better GPS with glonass and altitude but I don't find IGO very good for pedestrian use. If I want to go into the woods I'd need a slightly better map that has more than just green squares where there is no road. What's out there?

The pedestrian and hiker are quite different functions
If you intend to move in urban areas, then igo and similar programs are quite adequate. In their description is always "road coverage". Roads.
But, if you want to move in the wilderness, mountains, hiking or similar, then use specialized devices magelan/garmin, etc...
Btw I had a watch (Canyon) with GPS, and I gave it to my friend who is mountaineer.
    Google for your needs.

Many questions become very arduous, a lot of time chewed deja vu...Since we have lost all the year of work and effort, many people have no will to answer the same questions again. Me neither. Use a search, please.

I googled it too and came up with back country navigator. The problem with many apps is they want you to download maps over the internet for each individual hike. I like to download a whole region or state so that I have it.

Try Locus Free (for Android). Fully offline with OSM maps. Great but needs some learning.

There are too many apps in the store.
Like you I can't decide what too install in my phone.
I do jogging in the morning and I would like to know more about how far did I go.
    Exact miles.

One thing I have learnt over the years of GPS stuff is you need an app that does not rely on the phone network, but then you may only be City based and you have no problems, but also I for example end up in many non Phone base reception areas and only rely on GPS based maps, so you also need to decide which App you select for your needs.
Don't ask me what maps I use because they are not basically suited for phone use, or your use.
    Enjoy your outdoor life.

So there are three families of tools:

    * STREET and cities by car, bicycle and even on foot: iGO, TomTom etc

    * Outdoors/hiking (no network): Locus, Osmand etc. Totally offline with free OSM maps.

    * Sports (activity logging): Runkeeper, Sportypal etc. Most of these don't need a network during the activity and after uploading at home you can see more with maps etc ususally on the PC.

In my opinion todays phone's are fully fit GPS wise. But be sure to have a backup when hiking (friends phone, extra phone, paper map).

OSM maps may lack a roundabout here or there but (in Europe) they show an awful lot of even (ancient) hiking trails. And you can find many, many tracks in .gpx format for easy guidance in Locus etc.

So, define your goal and take your pick.

I live in Western Australia and I go Bush "outside the City" Australia is 7.6million square kilometers and Western Australia is 2.6 million square kilometers of that so one could get lost when you off the main roads "and many have "so knowing what App you use is important, I am very proficient with GPS maps both Electronic and transferring to paper Maps for the members that wish to join us, I can get you within 4 meters of any info on a Paper map " so long as there is a Co-ord system on the Map"
So it doesn't matter what you use ,but you need to be aware of other backups IF all fails "Electronics that is"
We had such a day the Temp was over 40c and the vehicle Aircons where having a problem" that can happen if the breeze is from behind" and our devices locked up due to Temp and we had no GPS support at all, but we knew exactly where we were because we where aware of our location from paper maps and experience.
