M8 I as said don't use my phone for GPS tracking as I have ALL data turned off "I can use a proggy called Maps, this is a Google maps thing and it is NOT via phone data it's via the built in GPS in my phone."
So anyway when I use a GPS in my car BUT it is not a Built in one OK.
    I use these:
etrex zpsomn27and This I use for walking around when I am doing Gold Hunting to track where I've been and if I walk to far "sometimes up to 6Km away, to make sure I return to camp, also carry a VHF CB and we chat."
PDA zpsarcasstl This I use to load my Maps and take us to the very remote places in Western Australia and get us back to the Bitumen road "This has been in use BEFORE they had In Car Navigation units about yr 2000" so you see am a person that really uses GPS to it's Full.
As I say I know where I am do you.

doesn't it depend on how often the tracking device updates it's location online? it shouldnt consume much data at all.

Does it though? My GPS won't connect if I don't have any internet connection on my phone for some reason. I wonder what I am doing wrong.
