    Default GPS Decision

Hi all, I have been researching GPS systems and found that my head has caved in and craving large amounts of Jack Daniels to help with being Dazed & Confused (Well more than usual )

I brought 4x4Map App of Hema and found out it is now a waste of money as I can't use the maps on other systems nor upload custom maps.

I have 28 Rooftop maps (Victoria/Australia) that I am going to scan and now trying to find the best unit to use it on. I do a lot of 4x4ing and wanting to do gold detecting.

A handheld unit would be best but I could just track my movements with 4x4map of hema on my iPhone app then export the data onto another unit/PC? I'm not sure how accurate an iPhone GPS is or would the Montana650t be a better option?

I was thinking the Hema HN7 as a base/Car GPS and use the 4x4Maps app while mobile. This way I can use oziexplorer to do all my pre-mapping using their maps on PC and my custom maps.

I would like to use oziexplorer as I'm not sure how good Basecamp is? I do want to buy the Montana650t but then the Garmin maps won't work with oziexplorer or use them as a standalone.

I do know that I need to choose one or the other but if I choose wrong it's going to be an expensive experience (Beta or VHS? - At least I got that one right )

I would like to have a Montana and use with oziexplorer on the PC as a lot of mates use the ozi CE version but to my knowledge will not work together.

I would like other people's opinions in which option is best in GPS, PC mapping and custom maps.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post and found out in my research of GPS that I wasn't sure if I was a wigwam or teepee, I just became two tents

    Cheers
    Ant

And welcome fellow Gold hunter, while you fight with Mulberry bushes and leaches I fight with dust, Snakes and Golden Orb Spidies, and many hours of bush walking.
Regarding GPS's well I only use 2 early series Etrax's and a HP PDA " as I was among the few people in WA to run in car Navigation "Moving Map" way back then about 2000.
I have a M8 that runs a HN7 and was asked to see if I could get maps on it to work "I couldn't in the time I had "1hr" and it was a pain to use as well, another M8 whom I go prospecting with has an VMS which is also a pain but I managed to get My maps to work on his machine via OziExplorer, that really took some time but he can follow me anyway.
I use 1 of the Etrax just for a route run and the other one I use for when I am walking around detecting "as a log" and then at appropriate times download them to the Netbook and combine them with the PDA log to complete the trip.
The PDA only has a 2GB SD "old" and I managed to get an 800MB Natmaps of OZ "my paid version is 2.94GB", I have been using OziExplorer since early 3.xx.xx and the PDA has been using CE since Ver 1.1 Beta.
I also have managed to work out and Calibrate the WA Mining Tenement Maps to run under Ozi and get them on my PDA.

To end this little chat don't come over and steal my Gold seems I see foot prints of the Eastern Staters and holes not filled in and no Gold for me. has been a very dry Gold hunt these last few years.
