The difference is not of 8 megabyte, this is of 17.41 megabyte.

    Multiples of bytes Binary:
    - 1024 KB (kilobyte)
    - 10242 MB (megabyte)
    - 10243 GB (gigabyte)

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    3 883 335 680 : 10242 MB megabyte (1,048,576) = 3,703.4375 MB megabyte
    3 901 591 454 : 10242 MB megabyte (1,048,576) = 3,720.847562789917 MB megabyte
    3,720.847562789917 MB megabyte - 3,703.4375 MB megabyte = 17.41006278991699 MB megabyte

    So 3 901 591 454 - gmapprom.img size (+ 17.41 MB)

Well yes, ~17 not 8 ... but MiB, certainly not Mb which is megabit and that'd be around either 139 or 64 of those .... the above calculation mentions megabyte [MB] which should now be accepted as a decimal [i.e. using factor of 1000] according to the IEC when talking file sizes and drive capacity whereas previously it was always, since the beginnings of IT anyway, considered binary [factor of 1,024] and it still is as far as JEDEC & Microsoft is concerned. This is confirmed by the Wikipedia link above. What's also confirmed there [albit timidly imo] is that MiB [mebibyte] should now only be used to denote binary but unfortunately sweet b*gger-all ppl do and that's not helped by the fact that JEDEC and M$ refuses to let go of the original sense of MB being binary [and good on 'em i say, they're actually right. Mac and Linux have rolled over though]. Similarly for binary: KiB, GiB, TiB, PiB etc for kibibyte, gibibyte, tebibyte, pebibyte etc. [the 'xxbixxxx' being a nod to binary] and so now kilobyte [KB], megabyte [MB], gigabyte [GB] etc is decimal as decreed by the IEC who were too wimpy years ago to tell the drive manufacturers to pull their collective scheming heads in and not misuse the binary terms as decimal. Result, total confusion and conflation of the terms.

So, the difference between 3,901,591,454 bytes and 3,883,335,680 bytes is 18,255,774 bytes, which is either 18.255774 MB or 17.410062789917 MiB and you can't have it as ~17.41MB unless you're Microsoft, or JEDEC talking about RAM size/semiconductor storage capacity.

Thanks goodness, so it hasn't been stolen at all!

Seriously though G, how can we ever get ppl to use the correct and unambiguous abbreviations if a highly-respected and highly-paid GURU like you doesn't??:

'Coz you didn't fix the [intentional?] typo Mb .... that and Mbit are official abbreviation for megabit, and decimal 18Mb = 2.25MB dammit!! Dunno why i even bother, no wonder BB gave up trying to get ppl to use the correct terms.

I gave total size in byte so the difference is in byte too. The bit is not for PC user. It is used in communication only because I can hear a music form 0 and 1 in my car radio when modem will be connected

I'm just messin' with you mate. Fact remains that Mb is for megabit and MB is for megabyte though, regardless of common/informal/incorrect usage ....speaking of zeros and ones and discordant music: 01000111 01001001 01001111 01001101 01000101 01001110 ... recognise the tune?

You're quite right that megabit is not much used in a PC environment these days as it was back when you and i were both pups. There's good reason for that i think, other than the size of a 'bit' being almost superfluous in the overall sizes now being used [much the same as 1 cent and 2 cent coins no longer exist in Australia, but $1.01 or $99.02 etc are still valid amounts of the currency, a 'bit' is still a valid measure of data size]. The real reason i believe, is that a 'byte' can be so many 'bits' depending on the environment used, and the original definition of a byte as 1 data word. So, 1 byte = 4 bits in a 4-bit CPU world, 1 byte = 8 bits in a 8-bit one, 1 byte = 16 bits in a 16-bit one, and so on. Too damned confusing anyway. But the term megabit was well used in the old 16-bit PC era as a measure of data storage capacity.

    Seriously? Do not remember.
    Maybe in streamers?

As for your discussion with G on the units - my point is that 1K[B] = 1024 bytes, 1M[B] = 1024K[B] and so on.
    Naturally 1 ton = 1024 roubles and 1 km = 1024 meters.

HaHa, you Russkies are such FUNNY guys! So you agree with G. do you, that the term 'megabit' was only relevant then in regard to data transmission? Not so, but seems you don't remember it's other usage unfortunately [btw, it's not like this with facts: "if you can remember the '60s you weren't really there man"].

The proper term is megabits per second [Mb/s or Mbit/s] when talking communications/data transmission [your 'streamers'?] of course, often expressed informally as 'megs' or 'megabits' for sure, but referencing 'speed' but that's not the only way the term Mb is valid. If you RU guys really want us to collectively continue beating our heads against a brick wall by arguing whether we aught to use non-official abbreviations over official ones, and what really is decimal and binary usage, and whether a bit/kilobit/megabit can not only be transmitted but also has size and occupy space or use capacity, then i'll spin this off and move the OT posts into a discussion thread somewhere in free talk section. Then we can continue with the original OT with or without resorting to even further and more way-out OTs .... So just say the word.
off for the present, but happy to box on elsewhere.
PS: Boy, you guys do stick together in dropping matches [which may then ignite bushfires] don't you ..... Extrapolating to binary weight, currency and lengths is interesting, but actually a 'binary rouble' really might help your economy quite a bit [i guess it would then have 102.40 kopecks and be called the RUB[B]?

That 'cuddly-toy' suit will get you stopped at the border of our pristine Island G, we've got enough smelly piddlin' little bear-like creatures here already. I assume you're referring to your short-lived 'interim' avatar as the Cheburashka suit, coz your current one seems to be a moose's head. So the avatar between the [shudder] 'OMG-that's-even-worse-that-Creepy-Santa-from-last-year-thank-heavens-it's-gone-now' one and the Garmin moose, right?

BTW, i'm now the self-appointed Abbreviation Police Chief. In fact i'm not just the Chief, i'm cook, bottle-washer, floor-sweeper, chauffeur, doggy-doo picker-upper and everything else in the Abbrev. Pol. Dept. [see that?, nice abbreviations, hey?]. At least i won't have any staff problems or dissensions seeing it's a dept. of one for the time being ......

A couple of posts copied to keep context, the rest moved here so we can box on if you want guys I bet you won't though, coz you know i'm right
