    Default Kazakhstan advice

    Hi,

    I'll be moving to Kazakhstan soon, so I'm very confused about what GPS would suit my needs best.

    I'll be using it mostly for city navigation on foot, but would of prefer something that will also work on a road trip.
    I'm also interested but not yet involved in geocaching.
    The proprietary maps in this, the Age of Information, rub me the wrong way, especially given the quality of non-proprietary resources.

    Based on my research, there's the Garmin 64 series, which has GLONASS. Considering Kazakhstan's proximity to Russia, I thought this might be useful. The flip side is that the 64 series appears to block open source maps.

    Then there's the possibility of buying an older 62 or 60 series. These seem to be open source but lack GLONASS...

    The Oregon 650 is also an option, but I'm not too sure about how it would differ from the above, and I don't think it has GLONASS or open source options.

    I haven't found non-Garmin models that fit what I'm looking for.

    Then there's Navitel. I'll be going there with a Galaxy Note 3, so maybe Navitel and its price beats shelling out multi-hundred dollars for a stand alone system.

    Any and all advice would be most appreciated.

    @Kaz Stan

    GLONASS presence will not improve anything in your case.
    GPSmap 64 does not block non-NT maps, except homemade Unicode maps.
    Oregon 650 supports any non-NT maps at this stage.
    Also you can try to install Garmin Street Pilot app for Android on your Galaxy Note 3.
