Yeh, i know what you mean. They give you one model [without a user manual or even a readme file lol], you finally sort that one out and then the next kid isn't even the same make, never mind model! What works for the other one causes havoc with the younger kid or vicky verka.

I have 5 boys, a lot of similarities here and there but they're all different and needed slightly different handling as kids. But some 'generic parenting' can be used effectively of course. Three of mine took after me, very hands on and instinctive with mechanical stuff and handyman orientated, one took after his Mum bigtime [got the brain but doesn't know a carburetor from a alternator and isn't sure which end of a screwdriver to hold]. Two of the boys are great natural cooks too, like their mum. The other 3 are like me, can't boil water without burning it.

Now i've got all the different model grandkids to sort out what's what with them ......

Ah, good! You're still talking to me. Sorry mate, you made the previous post about the voice files while i was composing that reply above to Iggy so i just simply missed it.

Truthfully, it wouldn't have mattered much if i had seen it 'cos i know sweet-b*gger-all about Garmin's proprietary vpm files. I've looked at them previously in a hex editor too but got confused and had to have a lie-down. Maybe the encryption is just simple xor? I dunno, that'd be an easy decrypt if it is so i guess you've already tried that. But your sweetness is wasted on the desert air in here, maybe you should open a new topic somewhere more appropriate [nudge nudge, wink wink .... maybe that's *cough* to you].

I think that our member marcoqc had a previous interest in cracking garmin voices, and maybe a few others have tried and perhaps even got somewhere with their efforts. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] is marcoqc's [No, i don't think that's what it means Bueller. Anyone else, anyone ... anyone] great swiss army knife app for garmin files. He was intending to add the ability to 'unlock' vpms and even has a tab for them but it still only says "This tab is for future version of the product ; coming soon". He hasn't posted in the thread for about a year, but has logged on here recently. He was working on a new version but it's not been posted yet, the current v2.2.5.4 even still uses the old gimgunlock without the map sig patch. But who knows what advances he's made regarding vpm files, give him a tap in the thread and see what happens. If nothing comes back, open a new topic.

Interesting that you have quite catholic tastes in movies like moi. Ex Machina > Highlander > Ferris Beuller's Day Off is quite broad.
I guess you like Spongebob and Seseme Street too hey?

Correct me if I'm wrong; but in order to get the .vpm from .rgn you have to run "Updater" (or Webupdater?) that's inside the .exe downloaded from Garmin? I've been playing with the .wav files from pigtones, they are a hoot. I want to take pieces from different voices and create them into one. Do you know if pigtones works on Nuvi765?

Spongebob and Seseme Street? Ugh, no. Didn't have access to them when I was little. I do remember fond memories of watching GI Joe, Transformers and Bugs Bunny. Strange that 2001 Space Oddesey was made like 50 years ago and still no "space movie" can compete with it (presentation wise.) Maybe Gravity comes close.

You're wrong so i'm correcting you. If you get a voice in the form of an exe file, just extract it to obtain the *.rgn file. Also in there is Updater.exe but forget that. Then open the rgn file in RGN_Tool and save the first section [unknown.bin] as the appropriate name for the voice with .vpm extension. But you're kinda correct, maybe you just talk funny . You certainly could just load the rgn to a device [or fake nuvi clone] with WU or load it manually with Updater.exe or run the voice.exe and then take the *.vpm off the device/clone's Voice folder.

You're not going to bang on about 'Lost in Space' now are you? If so, your 'free advice trial period' may expire soon.

EDIT: Oopps, missed the extra bit about pigtones. Yeah as far as i know then do work. I think they maybe don't for nuvi 300/600 series and earlier, but are ok on 700/7x5.

Yes, I mean that running "Updater" will transfer the .rgn to device and then you can copy off the .vpm; which I can't do because I only have access to android StreetPilot. So my only option is to try the RGN_Tool route.

"Lost in Space" and "Voyage to Bottom of the Sea" was a hoot (so colorful) Irwin Allen sold "Lost in Space" to CBS to compete with Star Trek. As a fan of Star Trek, I think this failed; but it's still silly to watch it (MeTV still air it every saturday night) The tune to the "Lost in Space" is the best, along with Hawaii-5O and Mission Impossible!

I heard that pigtones only work on Nuvi765 with FW4.6?

Edit: Ok every .rgn files I tried to open with RGN_Tool a popup saying "unsupported section identifier: XXXX" What does that mean?

This message means that RGN_Tool doesn't have some region number in the list of known regions.
I can advertise my tool gfw (it's published here, use search). It's a command line tool and it simply packs/unpacks your RGN/GCD file to/from a bunch of files with region contents.
I'm ready to develop it further and I will probably make it opensource.

But doesn't mean it can't still save the underlying file [unknown.bin] of course, which is what our yank friend was asking i think.

    @osiris4isis
Provided you know what's in the rgn file, in this case a vpm file, you can ignore the message because know how to save 'unknown.bin' with correct extension. But, easy way, if you have a backup of that 765 you lent to your brother, just copy it's GarminDevice.xml to a Garmin folder on a card or usb drive and drag the rgn file onto WU's desktop icon or exe file and it'll transfer the voice as a vpm file into a Voice folder on it. Maybe you're right about pigtones voices only working with later fw, dunno. If you beg and plead a bit i'll dust off a 765 and test one for you. Seeing you like those shows and themes you're probably all right .... EDIT: Was that a typo or did you have your tongue firmly in your cheek? Latest for 7x5 is V4.50, not 4.60:

Great, we might hold you to that. 'Probably' = 'Definitely going to' in Western vocabulary .

Neil, I will definitely make it opensource as soon as I learn to use svn or git or whatever it takes to start developing it in a civilized way.
I'm too tired fo passing source code in rar archives.

Thanks kunix and Neil. All I needed was a way to extract the .vpm data inside .rgn If ignoring the error because it's irrelevant because of "kludge" used to extract the data, no problem. BTW, isn't there an RGN section inside IMG used for storing polylines and polygons? I take it the .rgn format is NOT the same as the RGN section. After saving the file, it would seem the only way to know that it works is to load it onto a Garmin unit which I'm not able to do. I was hoping to find the AUDIMG section so I can extract the .wav files on PC; but it looks like the data is encrypted (probably built from Voice Studio) and no go. Neil, I might need you to test on 765 later, but not now since I'm still looking at the encrypted data. Might be 4.60, my brain is half asleep since it's 3:00am here now.
