    cityxplorer navigation for pedestrians

as a newbie in the field of gps navigation i would like to ask if members with expert, or like, knowledge can add a piece of information about software we are discussing in this forum, that can support pedestrian navigation as well. all of these software are more or less excellent for car navigation, but what happened when we go out from the car in the place we are visiting for the first time? information and guidance about places of interest and/or public transport, to mention a few, are of the essential importance. best regards to all members

Most in-car portable GPS receivers have a pedestrian or walking mode. The pedestrian mode optimizes the route for walking, and may also adjust arrival times to match walking, rather than driving speeds.
Garmin some years ago released dedicated pedestrian maps for Nuvi devices named cityXplorer maps including Enhanced pedestrian mode and public transit information with 3D builings landmarks.
Unfortunately car devices dont have a battery might support this mode adequately and I think this is the reason Garmin dropped them this year.
Probably these maps would have been more successful if they were supported by handheld devices.
Google, Navigon, iGO, Sygic introduced Pedestrian Navigation in their apps on phones, but IMHO we dont have till now a real dedicated satisfactory, GPS based only, App for Pedestrian Navigation : we have some city guides apps but they need Internet connection via GPRS, Wi-Fi or local network.
It's pity Garmin didnt implemented this mode in its long lasting battery devices .

You have to navigate to get to the good.

January 2015 map update has seen the debut of new pedestrian mapping for Berlin, London, New York, San Francisco and Toronto. These new maps add pedestrian-specific geometry, such as footpaths, garden paths and forms of way that are not accessible by car.

Let's hope they add Venice too, I work there and it can get frustrating to get around.

Most addresses only give you the civic number...

There is an app for android called 2gis that helps you find civic numbers but it needs an internet/wi-fi connection to work.
