    Lifetime Maps Terms & Conditions

If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately) or if your Garmin product comes bundled with a nüMaps Lifetime or other lifetime map subscription, you will receive map data updates when and as such updates are made available on Garmin.com during the useful life of 1 compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime or other lifetime map subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription or other lifetime map subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product.

Garmin only promises updates up to 4 times per year, is that what you mean Caty?

Interesting quirk that i found on a US device which had US lower 49 as OEM. A previous owner had purchased a separate NA LM for it [you can't buy US only LM], but of course it would install only the US lower 49 only update map to the device. If the option to install to PC is selected, then a gmap folder for the entire NA is installed. It is then possible to load the remainder of NA [AL, CA & MX] by MI to a microSD card complete with gma & unl codes for those maps specific for the device. Seems perfectly legal to me, after all the LM subscription is for the entire NA, and although Garmin states: "Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased" and therefore has a legal 'out' to say 'No, no, no! You can only have the OEM map area even though you've bought the entire NA now", it could be argued that in that case they should have offered LM for lower 49 at a reduced price. I'm sure the same would be possible if a 'One Off' map update NA was purchased as they also don't sell US only there either.

Now consider this: The owner of an OEM lower 49 purchases a LM NA for US$89.99:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Only the current version lower 49 is loaded to the device. He believes the blurb that he's only entitled to the 'same geographic area' as OEM so is not surprised when only lower 49 is updated on his device. But... he wants to venture into the Wild North and go South of the Border and so he has a look at what's available:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
He thinks he's gonna have to buy CA & AL for $59.99 and MX for $49.99 and innocently adds them to his cart:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Does Garmim's system tip him off that he's already paid for those areas and although he's not technically [legally] entitled to anything other than his lower 49 OEM, he can load AL/CA & MX from his PC to a card? No, absolutely NOT! How do I know for sure? 'Coz i've tried it and it takes you all the way to the point of final payment, I only had to click 'Place Secure Order' and kiss goodbye to $98.98 US [Garmin kindly gives you 10% discount off your next purchase after you've registered a device, and strangely it doesn't have to be something for the specific device you last registered either]. But, if the Account holder was not a US resident, you get flicked to your local Garmin site to complete the purchase and then have to pay the local price which is usually much higher than the US site price [stiff luck again]. This is a US account anyway and the LM devices was connected the whole way with the site navigation started from the Map Updates screen, via the 'Shop Maps' Quick Link then went thru' the above step-by-step and ended up here:
    r0pu

Ta ta 100 bucks, hello CA & MX which I already had in an entire NA gmap folder on my PC. I'm sure the above has happened more than once to innocent owners of a US lower 49 unit to which an NA LM has been added. "Come in Spinner" [AU for Welcome Sucker].

Garmin have the own conception of year and Christos birthday date. May be we would celebrate the New Year by Garmin style on this forum. For example - 2014, beginning of July is the great season in Italy, is not it?
Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?

Technically 2013 is the 14th Year of the New Millenium (the 3rd Millenium) AD
So Maybe that is why Garmin names the Maps as 2014.x
    It's the 14th edition since Y2K.
Then again why just not stick to the actual year as we know it.

Actually on NA Lifetime page there is "otherwise stated":
"nüMaps Lifetime gives you full access to the entire map coverage; however, some devices have limited memory and may not load the full North America map (nüMaps Lifetime also will update City Navigator® NT maps on your computer)."

I think that maybe the whole 'forward dating' thing somehow got away from them when they tried to sneak things forward a bit [in some parts of the World] and got caught up in their own web of attempting to deceive ppl into believing the maps were more advanced than what they are. We know that in fact CNs called 2014.x aren't really even 2013.x, they should be called 2012.x because the data isn't a year ahead [how could it be, and so who's gonna believe that anyway?], it's in fact about one year behind mostly. You are being way more than charitable dasil, when counting from 2000 [zero, 1, 2, 3 etc] where zero is actually the first number and therefore 13 is the 14th number ...? Sorry, but that's a bit of a crock. As to Giomen's mention of Christ's birth-date [year] being involved in this, well it's actually the other way around to the '14th year of the new millennium' because in those days there was no concept of zero as a number so Christ was actually born in the year 1 according to the calender that we now follow. So 'Y2K' was another big Crock in the sense that it wasn't really the start of the 3rd millennium, because it actually happened on 1st January 2001. The thing is that computers only know what the programmers tell them so as far as one of my old 16bit programs was concerned, on 1st January 2000 it was actually 1st January 1900. Anyway, if the guys who decided that Christ was born in the year AD 1 knew anything about maths, they would have called it AD 0 and we would now be in the year 2012. My head now hurts, so i need to cr@ck open a bottle of red ... the simple answer?: Garmin is so Garmin.

    @kanopus
That first statement by Garmin quoted by me has nothing to do with the physical capacity of the unit's memory, only the second statement you quoted refers to that and so they are actually two different things entirely. The first is a legal statement only and that's clear if it's read in context. The second is both a legal statement and a forewarning that your device may not be able by itself to hold the required updated OEM map data even though it could originally hold the outdated/oem data. Even if it has the extra capacity, nothing more than the original OEM coverage will be loaded to the unit's memory during the direct update process after an LM NA has been purchased. That extra mapping loading has to be done as a separate second step from the PC's full NA gmap folder as i stated. If it's a 8GM unit there is no problem to also put that on the unit. The device i was referring to has only 2GB [1.76GB usable] and the base, time and lower 49 detail maps take up 1.52GB alone and there's another 435MB in AL/CA & MX. This is in contrast to a modern unit which has full NA as OEM but has limited memory, in that case the user will be prompted to insert a media card so that all data can be loaded. That doesn't happen with a lower 49 OEM device unless the lower 49 data in itself causes the overflow.

I have a theory about this, which most probably may be wrong!

There were a few maps which were not updated regularly, for example the ones with Sensis data and the nuvis would have a "maps out of date" nag screen. So, does that nag depend upon the year and quarter in the map name or the date of publishing within the map? If based on the map name, then the nags would be deferred by at least a year or so, thus keeping the number of irritated customers down. Btw, the maps published from Taiwan (TWN, IND, SG/MY, TH etc) don't have this dating anomaly.

I can't verify but I expect that user can select form many regions and for example download Canada instead of his original 49 states. If not, then he should complain to Garmin basing on legal statements.

About CN naming - you can treat it as an expiration date. After this date nuvi can issue a warning: your maps are outdated.

I the example i've given, it is not possible to download directly to the unit/card anything other that the lower 49 image. Of course, the entire NA is dl'ed as a gmap to the PC if that option is chosen as i said. I think Garmin is having a 'two-way bet' on this. On one hand they clearly say [conditionally: 'unless otherwise stated'] that you are going to get only your OEM content updated:

Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased.
    (That's a legal statement only).

On the other hand, they have charged for a full subscription to NA. Trade Practice laws in many countries prohibit a supplier from charging for goods or services that won't be delivered, including partially not delivered. So i think the Garmin lawyers are smart enough to say to the marketing department 'Let them download the entire area we charged for, but only to their computer. If anybody complains, we can say that they are in fact entitled to AL/CA & MX and can load those areas separately via BaseCamp/MapInstall to their unit memory and/or media card along with the required codes'. That's the reason, i am absolutely sure, why you can in fact load the additional areas with gma & unl separately as another step altogether after dl'ing the US only image. Hence the 'get-out-of-jail-free-card' you pointed out "Unless otherwise stated" and the other related statement you quoted:

nüMaps Lifetime gives you full access to the entire map coverage; however, some devices have limited memory and may not load the full North America map (nüMaps Lifetime also will update City Navigator® NT maps on your computer
(That's both a legal statement about entitlement and a forewarning regarding possible limited physical memory)
So we are actually agreeing, not disagreeing Kanopus. Maybe looking at things from different angles is all.

I haven't tried but i'm sure it is also entirely possible to dl only the gmap folder and then send the entire NA or just CA as you suggested to the [OEM lower49] unit as the new detail map image, but then how do you easily then get [direct from Garmin] the JCV and in the case of entire NA if it's got Voice Recognition and for that matter 3D capability also get those files too without a useless downloading of the OEM-only img direct to the unit? Is there a trick i don't know of to do that?
